VENT: Damn micro-management

I am really starting to hate working in a corporate environment. I have been with the design firm I work for about 3 years now, and I love the people and the work, but not management and their procedures. Today, my boss told us no more internet, not even to check emails or other sites at lunch. He said "Strictly business only". Now, the funny thing about this is corporate and HR never told us this, and doesn't care as long as we aren't abusing it (and I'm not). The other departments also don't have this rule.
Only my boss told us this since he has OCD really bad, is a MAJOR perfectionist, and hates it if we laugh or even talk to our nieghbor for 20 seconds while working. Jackass_.

  • He sounds like that crazy guy on that "Flipped" show on Bravo. If he has no way of checking, check your sites anyway! Stick out tongue

Exactly like that guy! I mean...if it's corporate wide, then that's one thing. But since it's not, and he is just being an _ass about it, then whatever. I will continue to check my sites here and there, and more so when he is not around.

  • You Nest a lot.  Are you sure that your boss wouldn't consider your internet use abusive?

In our company guide book it says somethng along the lines of "If your use of the internet is interrupting your job function, and you are not able to perform your duties, then it must be stopped. Or, if you are using sites that contain adult content or abusive language, etc., those sites must no longer be visited during working hours."

Now--the reason why you 'see' me on here a lot in the day is I leave The Bump up all day, but it is minimized. 9 times out of 10 I am not even on it.
Plus, it's not interferring with my work. All my work is done and on time, and I am getting promoted in January.

  • I had a boss like this. I was actually more productive with another boss that let us socialize.

I couldn't agree more. If you are a "robot" glued to your desk all day, you have no break, no socializing, etc and it really gets you down = a lower performance on my part.
I need breaks here and there to break up the repetitiveness of the job.

ITA. FTR, I quit that job shortly after said boss took over.?

Smart move on your part. If the economy wasn't so out of whack, I'd probably do the same.
