From Great Expectations, p.313-314:
"Although parents are concerned that their babies could drown during a water brith, babies have a dive reflex that enables them to hold their breaths until their noses and faces are exposed to air; plus, they're still being supplied oxygen from their umbilical cords."
Re: rease.
Jen...YOU FREAKING ROCK!!!
Thank you!
That is just amazing... seriously, amazing.
I really believed that the amniotic fluid was magical in aiding to them in "breathing"
lol ... considering it's mostly their pee by the end of the pregnancy, it does seem like it could be something amazing. Pee that doesn't smell like pee, but instead like ocean water? A miracle!
and more ...
"First breaths are different for water babies than for land babies. A water baby's breathing will start slowly with almost invisible breaths, whereas land born babies are more likely to gasp [their first breath]."
Ok, that just makes them sound like two different species.
I wonder if one is better than another?? Crapit!
According to this book, it's super common in England to go with the water birth in deluxe birthing facilities ... moms rate it higher, babies are less traumatized by birth, etc.
I'm planning a water birth myself for this baby, which is why I'm fascinated with all things water birth. Not all hospitals do it, though.
