Does anyone know if stores around here carry Jarred onions? I am specifically looking for "Aunt Nellie's Whole onions" they are little pearl ones... and I am thinking they might be an East Coast/Boston thing. The closest thing i found at my Safeway was cocktail onions... but i don't think that's right, becasue of the vinegar in them. I am trying to make my grandmother's creamed onions for thanksgiving (add I know... its a Boston thing I guess... and Thanksgiving wouldnt be the same without them. But she passed away 18 months ago ... and my aunt is of no help) would frozen ones if I blanch them and drain them work??
Anyone.... anyone...

Do they have to be that brand or are you just looking for regular ole Pearl Onions?
If you are just looking for Pearl Onions, they sell them at any grocery store in the produce dept in little 6ish oz bags. They have white and red usually. (for x-mas I like to use both just so the color is pretty)
I have a delish recipe that I would call creamed pearl onions that I make for special dinners. Easy too... once you blanche the onions. Peeling those suckers SUCKS! lol
I'd love your recipe if you are willing to share! (lots of creamed onion fans in my DHs family)
hey Lauri.... well... my grandmother's recipe specifically says "4 jars Aunt Nellie's Pearl Onions" with a note not to use anything else. I have never made these... and miss them terribly. I guess I could try fresh too... but man, peeling them all....
I will send along the recipe too when I dig it out.... it is basically a white sauce and then a bag of stuffing mix (pepperidge farm in Boston) mixed with 1-1.5 sticks melted butter and baked.....
I'll keep hunting!
interesting... if you go to www.auntnellies.com it takes yo uto pillsbury's site...
I tried googling them to see if I could see what they look like but couldn't find them...
ahh, it specifically says in a jar. Interesting.
My recipe says to immerse the peal onions in boiling water for a few minutes then to blanche them in cold water the they will slip right out of their skins when pinched. yeah............. I've tried this and I do do it, it just still takes FOREVER, and it seems that only the very center of the onion is what comes out, seems like I'm wasting a ton of good onion in there!
