Babies: 0 - 3 Months

25th percentile for weight and Big Babies

DS had his 4 month check up today (few days shy of 4 months). Anyway, he was 13 pounds 12 oz (25th percentile). He was 7 pounds 12 oz at birth. He is ebf. Anyway, the pedi was not concerned (he's 25 1/2 inches long - 75th percentile) but it seems EVERYONE i know who has a baby is in the 75th percentile or above for weight. It seems like people love to brag about how heavy there baby is. When I tell people about DS's appt, they always ask "How big is he?" What's up with the big baby obsession? Anyone else have a lanky baby?

Re: 25th percentile for weight and Big Babies

  • Yep, 25th percentile for weight, 50th for height.  Tall and skinny baby for sure!  My Ped wasn't concerned at all and said she's doing great, so I'm not worried.

  • All babies are different. ?Don't be upset by it.
  • 90% H, 50% W

I occasionally get comments about how he has chicken legs and I should feed him more. (he eats like a horse)

I think it's a holdover from when there was a risk of not getting enough to eat. Fat baby= healthy baby.

Of course I tend to overthink things...

  • Gee...I know what you mean.  My ds is in the 5th percentile for his weight.  So don't feel bad.  My pedi wasn't concerned yet about his weight but I am going back to get him weighed in a week.  I wouldn't be jealous...long little baby's are just as cute.  I call him my "little" guy!  But I do look at everyone else's baby thinking "wow- mine needs to gain some weight!".

  • My baby boy was 75th for height and 25th for weight at 4 months too!! So, our baby's must be almost the same! My pedi said as long as he continues to grow for both, there is no cause for concern. The thing that is weird is that people still always tell me he is chunky...I think it is the cheeks :)
  • Mine has been in the 20-30%ile since 2 weeks before he was born! :)  I'm really proud of my little baby!  He actually got to wear his NB clothes for 6 weeks & at this rate will get plenty of wear out of his 0-3 as well.  I would be sad if he was too big to get to wear all his clothes before he moved up a size, so I'm fine w/him not being huge :)

  • DS is in the 99% for height and only the 50% for weight.  The whole fat baby = healthy baby is a myth.

  • My baby is 25th percentile for height and weight, she's ebf too. Pedi wasn't concerned, DH and I (I am 5'4-110, DH is 5'8) are little too, so I am guessing she's in line with her genetics, but yea, it worried me too. But our pedi said she's been growing along the same growth pattern since birth so not to worry. Also keep in mind that those percentile charts are based off of formula fed babies, they don't account for breastfed babies.
  • Mine is only 9th percentile for height and weight and her pedi wasn't concerned as long as she stays on the growth curve. ?Still, everyone tells me what a big baby I have - or what a small peanut. ?I think people just say stuff to make conversation.
  • Yep. DD was 25% for weight and 90% for height. Our Pedi wasn't concerned and said that she even expects to see the percentile for weight to decrease even more. That's just the way DD is built.

  • Thanks guys! I keep telling DH he has a dancer's body (I was a dancer). DH doesn't think that's funny ;-)
  • Mine has always been below the 25th %ile for both height and weight... I love that he's not a huge baby... he's able to wear all those cute outfits for a longer time, and he's heavy enough in his carrier as it is!  ;)  Percentiles really mean nothing... what matters is that each baby follows his/her own growth curve.  I hope mine stays little!  Big Smile
  • Fall love - DS has those same shoes Smile
  • At DS's 4 month he was in the 2% for weight and 3% for length!  He was born small and will probably always be a little boy.  I know that he's healthy and eats good so I'm not worried.
