Ammonia stink NOT on diapers........

Okay so this is somewhat embarrassing but I know that I've seen several conversations about CDs and any lingering ammonia stink so I felt this was the only place I could go for advice here.  I was just folding some of my husband's laundry (he usually does regular laundry himself so this wasn't an every day thing) and these clothes were warm fresh out of the dryer and i think his cotton boxer/briefs are having what I imagine the CD ammonia stink would be like.  What can I do??

I'm sure he's not embarrassed by it, but I'm embarrassed for him.  Seems not right - though if anyone else has had similar experiences do let me know so i stop thinking of poor DH as a freak of stink nature.. hehe..  We currently don't have any kids or anything so don't do diaper laundry or anything so I'm totally new to thinking about getting rid of stink.

Thanks for any help you can give to de-stinkify my hubby!!  :-)

Re: Ammonia stink NOT on diapers........

  • I swear I'm becoming an ammonia stink-crazed woman.  I smell it on my kitchen towels now, and am LESS than impressed.  My best guess is that synthetic fibers just hold any stinkage in our water.  Since we have super hard water where I live, we're more prone to stink.

Ugh, ugh, ugh.  I feel your pain.

  • haha - thanks for the response, i was starting to worry that i just had a super nasty boy!!

do you have any tricks for getting rid of funky smells?  was there anything besides sunning diapers that helps?  i thought maybe the same treatments could correlate?

  • Sounds like your things are getting clean enough.  If you have hard water you could add calgon to soften it up so your detergent is more effective, or you could try adding more detergent.

    :)

  • squeaky!  you're the go-to for detergent questions!  i realized after i read your reponse that he did that load of laundry and it's possible he doesn't know the right amount of detergent to use (we've been using tide with bleach alternative liquid) so that could be it - because i've never noticed the problem with my own things..  but we also always wash in cold water - do you think that could be an issue as well?  i have no idea if we have hard water - just that we have city water that smells like chlorine?  lol.

also - unrelated - i keep meaning to ask, is it weird to go from liquid to powder laundry detergent?  is it any different or do you just spoon it in when the water starts just like the liquid?  i've been dragging my feet on ordering some crunchy clean but our current detergent is getting low so it may be a good time to try it out.  does it matter whether you use hot or cold water?
