Anyone else hosting Xmas while pregnant?

We always do Christmas Eve at our house. Well, this year I will be 39 wks pregnant on Christmas Eve and told my DH's family that I didn't want to do it. I thought they would understand. BUT we are still hosting...but with alot of help from my inlaws with the cooking. But hosting is alot more than cooking. Its the cleaning before hand and the aftermath as well. I am a little ticked that someone else in the family (DH's side) didn't step up to take over. Not to mention that my last day of work is Dec 23rd!!!

Anyone else in the same boat?

Re: Anyone else hosting Xmas while pregnant?

  • We're hosting Xmas, but I won't be as far along as you.  I'm lucky that DH steps up to the plate and does ALL of the cooking for special occasions and our families are pretty laid back so I'm not stressing about hosting duties.  The cleaning part sucks but we're going to have to clean whether we host or not because we're remodeling now and everything is dusty and out of place.

  • That's kind of gutsy on their part. What happens if you deliver a little early? I'd think they'd want a backup plan at least...Can you try to tell them one more time (or have DH do it) that it's just not going to work out this year?
  • Yes! I am due 12/20 so there is a possiblity that I could have a baby or be miserably overdue so I suggested that someone else do Xmas this year. My sister insisted that we still have it at my house which I thought was super rude so I told her that's fine but I'm not cooking anything and I'm not cleaning anything and if I don't come downstairs all day oh well!
  • i would have said flat out no..thats too much.

  • We are hosting two separate weekends of family Christmas' at my house since both of our families live out of town and I'm not supposed to travel to them.  MH has taken off of work for the two days before each weekend to help get the house ready, cook, etc.  Also, my cleaning lady is coming to clean the house beforehand.

I agree with you, though.  Someone else should have offered to do it since you will be so close to your due date.  Besides the fact that it is a lot of work, what if you go into labor around then?  Do they have a Plan B?

  • I will have a c/s on 12/18, and most people are coming to my house for Christmas.  I've made it perfectly clear that I am doing nothing for it.  In fact, I'll be proud of myself if I make it to the dinner table.
  • I'd have said no, too. At 39 weeks, that's ridiculous.

However, we're hosting Thanksgiving for the ILs and I'm 37 weeks tomorrow. I'm really questioning the wisdom of that right about now.

  • We are having DH's family for Christmas, they are flying out from IL. ?But I will only be 35 weeks at the time.

I cant believe some of your families, cant they understand that hosting is NOT what you should be doing? ?Tell them to buy some stauffers lasagna, bag salad and frozen bread and host it at their house!

  • oh yes - and not just pregnant, but about 34 weeks pregnant AND on bed rest. My dad, his wife and my brother, and my husbands parents and brothers are all coming for about 10 days.  I'm actually SOOOO excited for the company and my husband is also excited for help with all the cooking and cleaning!  He's had to do it all the past 6+ weeks, so having family come to town is going to be wonderful for both of us.  (Neither of us have any family in the area - the closest is about 1500 miles away...)

Try to relax and just have fun - no one is going to judge you for having an unvacuumed carpet...have them help with the food and just enjoy your time together before baby comes!  (Or maybe baby will already be here by Christmas!)

     Good luck!

  • I'll be having Christmas this year.  I'll be 37 weeks pregnant, but its just my parents and my sister and her friend coming.  I'm sure my mom will end up doing most of the cooking anyway, so it should be fun.

  • Yep, I just had my baby shower at my house yesterday, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.  I hate doing the cleaning, but since we just did a deep clean before my shower we only have to pick up and vacum for Thanksgiving and the house will already be destroyed by time everyone comes for christmas dinner.

DH's parents are divorced and remarried so we have the only netural location, so I host almost every holiday and family events!

  • We're hosting Christmas at our house and I'll be 37 wks pregnant but, I'm having everyone bring almost all of the food and I'm planning on keeping it very casual and simple. The cleaning part sucks but, that's just the way it is I guess!
