broken skin.....

My DS has had a red butt for about a week.  I put diaper cream on it and the redness went away, but there are still a few patches where the skin is raw.  i have continued with the cream ( cali baby and Aveeno) but the broken skin is not getting better.  Any suggestions?  Should i stop using my CD's for a few days? ( i have only been using them for 2 weeks, DS is 3 weeks old.....)

TIA!

Re: broken skin.....

  • When the skin is raw like that it's harder for it to heal because it's in constant contact with wet diaper and or poop. What kind of covers do you use? I would put him in your most breathable (prefolds or fitted would be best) diaper without a cover when you're around the house and change him as soon as he pees. Naked time is also a really good solution here. Since he's so small and non mobile you can lay him on a absorbent blanket or prefold and let his bum breath.

Also - make sure he's really dry before you put any diaper creams on him because otherwise you're locking the moisture in rather than keeping it out and it could be making it worse.

  • this may sound silly but if you are breastfeeding put a little breast milk on the spots before you do naked time, it may help.  thomas had some scratches on his face and when i put a little bm on it they healed overnight.
  • Actually the bm isn't a bad idea - I can't remember the exact reasoning but it does have antibacterial qualities.
