Will won't fall asleep without the light on. Right now he has the (very bright) overhead light on as well as his nightlight. If I try to turn it off before he is sound asleep, he wakes up. He also has his door wide open. If he wakes up in the night, he will turn the overhead light back on. Obviously he's afraid of the dark, but it's SO bright in there. LOL
Your child? Dark or light room?
Re: Let's discuss your child's sleeping environment.
DD sleeps with the night light on and the door shut. When we leave her room we say "night- night" turn off the light and shut the door, this has been going on for about 6 months now, I hope it continues forever!!
You take my ovaries, I take your yarns.
Dark room. No lights at all. Well, we have a digital clock in there, so that casts some light. And his room right now doesn't have a door, we just have a curtain strung across there, so he gets some light in around that (we live in a rental and we are not installing a door for the year we're going to live here).
He does sleep with a sound machine. And the room has to be cool. It definitely can't be over 72 in there or he will not be able to sleep. He prefers it to be closer to 70 when he actually goes to sleep. I think that's one reason he doesn't really nap at home any more- we live in Santa Monica and have no air conditioning, so most days by nap time it's in the high 70s in his room, if not warmer.

It's pretty dark in L's room. He just has a nightlight on.
We do have a lamp in there and it has a touch base that has three settings -- maybe you could get something like that and have it on the dimmest setting? I really like ours for in the middle of the night when we need to see better than just with the nightlight because it's not *so* bright.
He has a nightlight and it's always on.
He also uses his aquarium and that comforts him, I'm sure.
But when the aquarium breaks, as it does sometimes, he's okay without it.
Me with my littlest.
DS1 - nightlight and door closed - need quiet
DS2 - nightlight & in our room - can't see me if awake, won't sleep if sees me.
