GMD pre-folds for newborn

I am so undecided about what I should get to a newborn, but tending towards GMD pre-folds and thirsties covers due to budget considerations. I am wondering if I need to buy the newborn size pre-folds or can you buy the yellow-edge ones instead. I was a average size baby, but my DH was bigger (11lbs), but he was late, so I am thinking/hoping that the baby will probably tend towards average. The snugglebottoms on babybunz.com have been highly recommended to me, but they're a little more expensive.

Thanks

Re: GMD pre-folds for newborn

  • I'm doing the GMD newborn prefolds and thirstie covers too.  GMD was the best rec'd to me since the diaps are wider.  As for how big baby is.... your doc might be able to give you a good idea towards the end.  How big you and DH were when babies really doesn't have an impact.  :)  I don't know anything about the snugglebottoms though, sorry.

  • Since I haven't had my baby yet, I really don't whether I've done the right thing, but I bought the NB GMD prefolds and just finished prepping them.  They're pretty small, so I think most babies will grow out of them soon.  But I wanted a proper fitting NB diaper, and didn't want to go straight to yellow-edge, so I only bought 12 of the NB prefolds, and got 6 GMD infant fitted diapers too.  The fitted diapers look a lot bigger (although I haven't washed them yet, but I don't think they shrink like the PFs).  I figure I'm not out too much money that way if she outgrows them quickly.
  • I'm using the orange edge newborn size right now and they work great.  I love how nice and trim they are!  Will is right around 8 lbs and I would say we'll get at least another month or two out of these though certainly if you do have a bigger baby that would be different.  I also like the fact that I can use the nb pfs as inserts in pocket dipes when he gets bigger so it's not like I spent all that money to only get a few months use out of them.  I do have some of the yellow edge pfs as well for when we need them and they would be really bulky on my little man.

  • What covers are you using? And how many for newborn?
  • I started with just nb size prowraps (3 of them) because they have the cut out for the cord.  Once the cord fell off I was able to use others.  My favorite covers are xs thirsties but bummis sww work well over the prefolds also.  I have 7 covers right now which may be a bit much but ebf poo is so runny they get dirty fairly often since I'm still perfecting my folds.

  • My 21 month old can wear a yellow edge at 23 lbs...I'd go with the newborn.
