I'be been looking at train tables but they are $$. Could I juts buy th etracks and trains and set it up on the floor in the basement. Or cover an old cover table in a few layers of sheets. I worry we'll spend a ton of money on tracks, trains and a table and he'll be doen with trains within the year. He'll be 2 next month
Re: do you need a train table
We had trains when we were little and never had a special table. DS has a small track and 2 trains now that we just set up on their little toddler table, but most of the time he pulls it into the floor to play with it!
If you really felt like you "needed" a table there is a super cheap one at JCP.

here's the link for the table
I do not think a table is necessary at all! Playing on the floor is just fine, and they have mats that have tracks on them. We are getting a train table for DS, but it's also a activity table so that he can sit at it and color, finger paint, whatever. But, again, he doesn't NEED an activity table either
I do know that IKEA has train tables for like 20.00 if I remember correctly.
