bolting furniture to the wall

We just bought two seven foot tall bookcases for our living room.  Sam doesn't spend too much time in there, but given the size, I think they still need to be secured to the wall just in case.

The problem is, for the straps that we have, there's not enough of a lip on the back of the shelf to screw in the brackets. We found a different type on line that claim to have an adhesive that secures to the furniture.  My DH is skeptical of how well that would hold.

Any thoughts or ideas for me?

  • I don't think I'd be comfortable with the adhesive kind.
  • I agree, I wouldn't be comfortable either.

MH used some wall hooks with anchors in the wall, then plastic ties that have a weight capacity of 100lbs or something ridiculous to hook the bookcases to the wall.

Sorry, but I don't know how to better explain it because I'm not sure of the actual names for the stuff he used.

But I would go to Lowe's and see what they have.

  • We bolt everything.  Because, DS can drag a chair anywhere, and climb anything these days.

DH made some anchors into studs in the walls and used a wire that's approved to over 100+ lbs to keep them up.

We did that with pantry shelves in our basement, too.

  • hmm I would not trust the adhesive either. ?Most of our stuff came from Ikea and came with anchors that attach the individual piece to the wall. ?I don't know if maybe Ikea would sell those?separately?or something?

  • I guess I'm with everyone else.  My girls have been known to climb our bookshelves and their dressers...  Indifferent  The stuff from IKEA came with clips, but we just bought L clips and bolted everything to the wall using wall anchors.  I'm not sure what you mean about it not having enough of a lip on the shelf.  I just screwed one part of the L to the top of the bookshelf (usually at the ends where the wood was thickest) and the other into the wall (using the anchors).
