Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Tell me about teething just before the first tooth appeared

DD is miserable today; nothing I do or give to her is helping!  I've given her Motrin, Orajel, and Tylenol, and tried rubbing her gums with just my finger and also with a cold washcloth.  She's not a big fan of teething rings just yet, though.  She's 5 months old and teething HARD for the second time, and this time seems more prolonged and severe than the first teething period we saw a few weeks earlier.  Does this mean she might be closer to that first tooth? I don't see any bumps or white spots on her gums, though, so do we have more misery to come before we see anything?  I feel so bad for her; it's wearing her out, too, though, so naps are going really well today. :)

Re: Tell me about teething just before the first tooth appeared

  • DS was miserable for a week before his 1st tooth came through and didn't have white spots or swollen or anything. then he woke up one morning and his gums on the top in front were so swollen and a few days later the 1st tooth popped through.

  • Doh--just saw the post below; never mind!  But if anyone else has anything to add, I'd love to hear more experiences.

  • DD was horribly miserable for nearly two weeks before her first tooth popped out. She was chewing on everything, drooling a lot, had a bad runny nose and was coughing/sneezing a lot too. We were also traveling so it made it that much worse for her. Right before the tooth cut, the orajel helped, otherwise it did nothing so I didn't use it. What I do is give DD cold or frozen washcloths, teething rings (you can hold for DC if they can't hold well yet), ice cold water in her sippy, lots of nursing, alternating tylenol and motrin, with teething tablets mixed in too. At night I give DD motrin plus teething tablets to calm her down for bedtime. She also didn't STTN anymore and got up nearly every two hours for a while.
