Pregnant after a Loss

who can tell me about aspartame

So I have been drinking a liter of water a day for about a week now and until today I saw it has aspertame in it...I didn't realize that it had it in there and figured because it was a flavored water with 0 calories it would be ok, I told the nurse about it when she called me and told me I should be fine (my betas and u/s have been great and that has been every week for 4 wks so far) she just told me to drink half of what I am drinking now of it. Do you know what the aspertame does or why they tell you to steer clear of it if you can? What are you guys drinking right now? I figured just regular bottled water would be my best bet. I wasn't sure if all caffeine free drinks carry it like diet caffeine free coke or what.

Re: who can tell me about aspartame

  • I don't know anything about aspertame, but I've just been drinking plain old water from the fitler in the fridge.  Not a fan of flavored water...

  • I've read alot of conflicting info on artificial sweeteners, it's so confusing.  I try to use one pack of splenda in my tea a day and that it's, I cut out diet soda and stuff just in case.
  • Not really sure but I haven't drank anything with any artificial sweeteners. The only sweetener I will have is plain old sugar.
  • Aspartame is an artificial sweetener, like saccharin, but made with a slightly different molecule chain.

I don't think there are any studies done on pregnancy and aspartame, but I try to limit my intake of it, along with anything else man-made or artificial.  I've always tried to eat very "clean" and especially while pregnant (which is so much harder! See my Velveeta craving post of yesterday. :-D )

For drinks I mostly drink plain filtered water,  or juice. I do occasionally have a soda though (much more in the first tri when I was nauseous) and I just go for a real-sugar one.

  • Aspartame is an artificial sweetener that is about 200 times sweeter than real sugar so the amount needed is much less.  There's lots of controversy about aspartame because it breaks down into some really nasty things in your body such as formaldehyde and formic acid, which people believe may lead to cancer...only 10% of the aspartame you ingest converts to these 2 byproducts in particular so really the amount is negligible unless you're consuming mass amounts of the material.

Sorry if that got too dry for some...if you can drink just water, then stick to that!  Hope this helps.

  • Oh, and from what I have read from the FDA, they claim it's safe during pregnancy-I'm assuming in small amounts.
