Is May considered summer?

Just curious... what months do you consider to the seasons to be?  I saw in someone's sig today that they were due in May and having a Summer baby.  And it made me think... is May really summer?

In my head summer is June, July & August.  Fall is September, October & November.  Winter is December, January & February.  And Spring is March, April & May.  (Even though it still usually hot as all hell in September and freezing in March.  But that's just how my brain categorizes them).

I'm interested to hear what you guys think...

From a popular culture point of view, in the United States summer season, is often considered to begin at the Memorial Day weekend (the last Monday in May) and end at the Labor Day weekend (the first Monday in September). Likewise, another set of pop-culural reference points for summer is the time when elementary and secondary schools close down for the "summer vacation". This period usually lasts from around June 7-30 until around August 25-September 10, depending on where the school is located.

  • I guess I consider May summer because it's already 97 degrees outside.

April is end of spring. May-September is summer. To me, summer is hot weather.

  • Yeah I saw that too and thought, "May is not summer, it's spring."  Part of June is even spring, summer starts around June 21st, fall starts around Sept. 21st, winter around Dec. 21st and spring March 21st.

  • Uh, by my calculations, summer is June 21 - Sept 21 or thereabouts.  May is spring.  However, you may wish to recommend to this person that May 24th is a TRULY spectacular day to have a child.  All the best babies are born on that day.

  • The way you broke down the months to seasons is the same way I view them.  I think summer doesn't officially begin until like June 20-21.
  • May is Spring. I think officially Summer doesn't start until late June, unless I made that up, which is entirely possible.

  • Not in Minnesota. LOL We probably still have snow then :)

Yeah, I always think of May as a spring month.

  • For a second I thought I was on 1st tri, but then I read your explanation. I've seen them too, and wondered why the morons think it's in summer. May is considered spring. Summer doesn't begin till June.
  • May is spring to me.

  • I think it depends on where you live. In Georgia, we get temps up to the 90s in May. It definitely feels like summer by May.

  • I've never thought of may as spring. Our spring is March and April, when it's not hot as hell outside. I guess I go by the weather, oh well. But the weather down here is screwy, last week the high was 79 or 80.

So using that logic, here in Miami where I live it's pretty much always summer.  We have a few weeks of spring and fall and it's never winter.

I should say that, technically, it is spring, but I understand why someone might say a May baby is a summer baby. Kids and teachers are already out for summer vacation by May 3rd here.

True, it definitely feels like summer weather in May here in SC, but technically it would still be spring.

That's awesome!  I wish I lived there.  It's only been cold here for a few weeks and I'm already sick of it.

So does that mean you don't really consider anything to be winter if it never really gets cold?

It gets cold, it'll get down in the 30's or sometimes the 20's. But that is always late November through early Jan. And I have only seen snow 4x in my life. Can't wait until I move to northen Indiana!

  • I tend to group the seasons based upon the official starts, but I know a lot of people think that summer runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day.  So technically that would be in May.  I'm in CT, but I guess if you are some place where it is hot in May it might be easy to group it into summer.

I agree.  I go by what the calendar says the season is.

  • I agree- the end of May may be summer, but in the beginning when I am due, I consider it to be spring.  The kids are still in school, and here in MN it can snow into April, so if all of May is summer then there is no spring at all.

I think it is also the same thing right now.  Some places it is definetly fall, but I have a friend in Alaska and today they have a -24 wind chill.

  • No.  Summer starts June 21st or whatever the solstice is

Uh you do realize that seasons are not weather dependent right?

  • My bday is May, and I was born in the spring.  Besides, thats when everything just starts to bloom!

  • Since when are seasons a matter of opinion? It does not depend on weather. Summer starts at the summer solstice (around June 19-22ish) and ends in late September.
  • May is Spring.  Heck here May might even be winter... I can remember a huge snowstorm at the beginning of May when I was a kid.
  • I'm due in late May and figured I'm having a spring baby.
