Prepping formula bottles for daycare

I am trying to figure this one out. I don't usually do any of these at home, so it will be new.

I have to send already made bottles.

Do I send the usual bottles- like I dunno, 4 bottles of 4 or 5 ounces, and then send an extra bottle with extra in it in case she wants more at some feedings?

Then I just have to reheat the unused (the ones totally not eaten at all- not the left over part from an eaten bottle) at home and use it?

Re: Prepping formula bottles for daycare

  • Can you keep a thing of formula at daycare? I always just had a couple of bottles and they mixed the formula. If there was a bottle at the end of the day I used it that evening.

  • I sent the number of bottles I thought she would take during the day and estimated a bit more (i.e. she usually took 2-3oz, I made 4oz just in case).  They discarded any unused portion per state health regulations so I just got back empty bottles at the end of the day.  I left an emergency stash of formula with an empty bottle in her bin in case they needed it.

  • It's state regulations here that providers can't make bottles, they have to be pre-made.  So I take in the maximum number of bottles I think he might take.  Alot of times he hasn't taken the last one by the time I pick him up, so I just take it home and heat it up when he's ready to eat.  If he doesn't finish a bottle, they dump it and rinse it out for me.

  • We send in 4 bottles filled with the right amount of water, they add the powder.  He usually has an unused bottle by the end of the day, but there have been the rare days when he needs more than 4 bottles.  We use drop-ins so we just leave a small pack there just in case.

  • yes that's exactly how we did it.  Our DCP would not mix.
  • day care has an emergency "unopened" bottle of formula for emergencies . . with an extra bottle if needed and i prepare what she needs for the day.?

  • I sent bm bottles to daycare, but I think the concept should be similar.  I always nursed DD on my lunch hour, and then for the first week I sent in 3 bottles.  Once we got on a good schedule, I just sent the 2 bottles she drank every day.  She had a morning bottle, nursed at lunch, and then had an afternoon bottle.  If she was hungry when I got there, I could just nurse her.

It's probably a bit easier for you since you can just use the extra bottles that evening.  What's your babies schedule like now?  I'd probably send as many bottles as she usually takes during the day, maybe one extra.  She's still pretty young now, so she's probably not on much of a schedule yet.  She'll start getting on a more regular schedule soon so it will be easier to figure out bottles.

  • They can't mix the bottles at our daycare either.  You can either buy a couple of premade 2 or 3 ounce bottles to keep at daycare (basically similar to the samples we came home from the hospital with).  Or send a can of ready made forumla daycare can use if ncessary.

When DD first started daycare, we sent her with an extra bottle each day and gave her what she didn't eat at night.  When she was on more of a schedule, I gave an extra half opunce in each bottle, and send the readymade can/bottles for an emergency.  DD is 9 monhts, has been in daycare since 3 monoths, and we've use 3 of the extra bottles.
