I got my maternity leave check AND my paycheck?????

I got my maternity leave check in the mail after 7 days then 4 days later I got my regular check electronically deposited in my bank account. I thought nothing of it because I thought it was my vacation or sick days they paid me for while I was waiting for my disability check. Then today I check my account and again I had a full weeks of pay in my checking account. I was shocked again. This time I called my work and talked to Human resource, which also does our payroll. I told him since he is fairly new that I didn't want to get in trouble or get him in trouble but I got my disability check AND a full pay check from the company. He told me not to worry about it because he call corporate which is in NJ and they told him to pay me like this. He said if anything is wrong it's on then because they specifically said to do it this way. Our corporate office just bought out the company in January so I was shocked that they do things this way. They are a BIG corporation too. I'm getting my disabilty check and a full pay check. Should I be worried or just leave it alone. I live in CA and don't want to have to owe anything when I get back to work in about 16 weeks.

  • I would just be careful with that money. Maybe set it aside until you get back to work just in case they make you pay it back.

  • I would be careful not to spend it right now.  Maybe just set it aside in case they decide they want the money back.  I would also start looking at things to buy since it's extra money, but definitely wait to make any purchases until after going back to work.
  • In addition to your phone call, I would send an email to this same individual so you get the response in writing in case you need to dispute it in the future.
  • I was overpaid 3 extra weeks of sick pay while I maternity leave - and they took it all back. ?I would set the extra money aside just in case.
  • Just a warning -- my husband accidentally received two extra autodeposit paychecks.  we contacted payroll immediately, etc.  Not only did they take the money back (which was fine), but they autodebited it from our account, like 6 weeks later, with no warning.

Luckily, we had made the call to just leave it sitting in our main checking, rather than move it over to savings or otherwise set it aside until they told us what to do with it.  Apparently when you sign an autodeposit form, you also give them the right to autodebit to correct for errors.

  • I definitely would NOT spend it. I'd just leave it alone in case they change their minds later.
