what is WRONG with people? another bad name!

Just found out a friend of mine who is pregnant with her first is naming her son after both her father and her DH's fahter.

The problem? They are all VERY Greek Orthodox.

The child's name = Ignatious Haramblos Verygreeklastname.

They'll call him Theo for short.

I was wondering the same thing.  Seems like an awful long name for a little kid.

  • I have no idea where Theo comes from ... maybe Ignatious in Greek = Theodore?

That poor kid. You'd think they'd spread the naming love around instead of saddling that child with all that ...

  • My little brother's first name is Kaleomanaokekai. I'd take Ignatious over that haha.
  • Shannyn, are you Hawaiian?

  • My stepmom is. So now my bio dad thinks he is, too. They have 3 younger sons that they named Devin, Nicholas and Cameron. Poor poor Kaleo...
  • The poor child is going to be in high school before he learns how to spell that name.

  • Well I wouldn't knock on such kinds of names just based on the sound of them because they are part of their culture.

But I have to admit that living here you have to make exceptions. I wanted something that could be easily pronounced by both english and spanish speakers. Turns out it is now the name of the model of a car in Colombia...oh well the kid will be living here.

Soon to celebrate the day we met, even if the day before marks when we said goodbye.
  • As to how Theo could come from that...My DH's name is Louis John August LastnamestartswithW IV.  He goes by Zack.

Story is, mom wanted to name him zack, dad wanted him to have the hereditary family name, so they compromised, named him that name, and called him Zack.

FYI, had this baby been a boy, he'd most like have been #5

  • long name for sure, but i really can't fault anyone for using family names.

not sure where they got theo from, but i guess it's possible they just like theo and picked it as his common name. i've heard of jrs, IIIs, IVs, etc. having their legal name and then a common or nickname that is just a name the parents liked. probably something the kid would have been named had they not wanted or felt obligated to choose a family name.

  • I was going to say the same thing.
  • thats not a name. Thats the alphabet.
  • I think it's perfectly fine to use family names to carry on tradition ... but I almost wish she'd have used the one name this time and the other name next time. To each their own, I guess.
  • How long is it going to take this kid to learn how to spell his name?  That's just cruel and unusual punishment.
  • Went to school with a guy named Ignatius Turdo.  I still laugh everytime I think about it.

    OMG, that is hilarious!

  • it would be different if they weren't Greek and just thought it sounded cool or picked something from so far back in the family that it wasn't even a name that you'd find Greek people with anymore. But if both sides are Greek it's perfectly reasonable for the kid to have a Greek name and really, Ignatius isn't all the uncommon.

and coming from someone that has a distinct and long last name, it really isn't a big deal for a child to learn a long name and he will probably end up being a really good speller!

  • Meh- I like "ethnic" names and I that they're naming the child after people that mean something to each of them. The nickname's short and cute too. I honestly like this name better than some of the trendy names right now.
  • Poor child!
