Babies: 9 - 12 Months

When to start using plates, spoons, etc.

DD is doing fine with most table foods and just eats with her fingers.  I put the food (cut up) directly on her high chair tray and let her have at it.  When should I start introducing using a plate with her?  Or spoons?  I have a feeling a plate would just get knocked on the floor, but maybe I'm behind the times.  :)

Re: When to start using plates, spoons, etc.

  • I just gave her a bowl yesterday thinking it would be easier for her to scoop up the peas & carrots. And she did okay. ?I mean, at one point she did tilt the bowl up and just let hte food roll into her mouth... but at least she didn't hurl it across the room!

We started with a fork this week too. I gave it to her just to keep her quiet and occupied while I was trying to eat. ?But she immediately tried to stab her food with it. ?So I helped her get it on the fork and she ate it like a pro. ?

I say go for it. You may be pleasantly surprised!

  • We started practicing with a spoon, but I think it'll be another couple of months before DD can actually feed herself. Bowls and plates are useless in our house, since everything ends up on her tray anyway.
