Do you have an emergency fund?

Re: Do you have an emergency fund?

  • Yes!  It's a must for me.

Yes!  It's a must for me.

Ditto. Our E fund has also given us a piece of mind while I've been out on leave.

  • Yup- we have a money market account. Definite peace of mind.

  • Technically speaking...no.  But we do have big 401(k) balances so we could always take a loan against that if we REALLY needed to.  Not the best plan but it's what we've got to work with.

  • Yes.  It's a little depleted now because we had to pay for a new roof but should be back up to par by the end of the year.

  • You bet! Is it fully funded with 6 months of living expenses? No.  But we do have funds set aside for an emergency and, once we've powered our way out of debt, we'll focus all of our effort on building that up.
  • We had a pretty nice one, but due to medical expenses it has been pretty depleted.  I figure it should be getting built back up by next summer.  For sure was never 6 months worth of living expenses, but hopefully someday I can work on that!
  • Yes, but after our move and me working part-time, it is not as big as I would like. We are working on building it back up. I would like at least 10k in there...

  • yes, but its not nearly big enough, we are working on that now
  • No. Every extra cent goes on the mortgage of our investment property (that I bought when I was single). It is redrawable within 24 hours and in the meantime saves us interest.?

HAving money sitting around in an ordinary account just seems ridiculous to me. The next best is to have it in one of those online savings accounts but they also take 24 hours to call on so for us it is much better to stick it on the mortgage over our regular repayments.

  • Yes, we have 3 months of living expences in the bank. And we are hoping to have a baby so we also have $4k in the baby fund to cover what insurance won't for the delivery.
  • Wow -- I am surprised at all of these answers.  We do not have an emergency fund as money in the bank.  We have our home and 2 rental homes -- right now it's not the best investment, but it will go back up.  Would I love to have an emergency fund?  Yes, but it's just not possible!
  • Yes, right now it's 4 months living expenses + baby fund.

  • We have about 9 months of living expenses in a money market. Every once in awhile we dip into it for big expenses, but we replenish it as soon as we can. Ours is through Capital One, and it's only getting 3% interest right now (hey, better than the stock market, so I'm not complaining).

  • Absolutely - we have about a year's worth of living expenses saved just in case.

  • we have a little - maybe one month's expenses.  We had more prior to DD, but there have been extra expenses this year - a new A/C, medical bills.  Plus, we are living just within our means.  We have zero debt though, and we put a ton into our 401ks and HSAs, so we do have back up if we ever need it.
  • We don't have an "emergency fund" per se, but we do save around 30% of our income -- about half to 401(k), but the other half goes to stock accounts, savings accounts, etc. that we could easily draw upon in an emergency. I really don't worry about it; even if both of us lost our jobs, we would be fine for at least a few months.
