Why

Is it always open season on people who have a Christian/Conservative point of view?? Seems to me, it's wrong to bash every other religion in the world but Christianity is fair game. Flame away!

  • I agree!  Its a double standard.  Christians say they don't agree with many things and the world calls them haters.  But those same people don't agree with Christian views....in my eyes that makes those people haters.

The rest of the world is soooo worried that Christians will push their views on everyone but at the same time try to push their views on Christians.

  • Well as long as conservative christians try to legally curtail the rights of others because of their religious views, I will happily take verbal aim and fire.  Get your bible out of my right to an abortion, discrimination against gays and lesbians, drink sales on Sunday, and hundreds of other little tiny freedoms the government has taken away or not given because of the religious right, and we will all get along fine.

Soooo.... Christians are the only ones who try to keep you from those "rights?"

Thats why we all vote!  Sometimes we like the outcome, sometimes we don't.

This is why we vote. It's not like the "religious right" can get things passed all on their own. And last time I checked, we had a democratic majority in Congress.

  • Though to be honest while there are some crazy Christians out there thats not to say that the other religions don't have their crazies as well... I've known plenty of conservative Christians who were still accepting of the person that I was, which is good enough for me.
  • I gotta admit the people around here just hate Catholics with a passion.  My mom freaked when she found out dh's mom is Catholic.  You would've thought that she ate babies or something.

Believe me, I totally agree! Duggars, anyone?! I'm not trying to imply we're all perfect. I just wish there wasn't such a double standard.

  • What about Jews???

I think it's much easier to see persecution when it's happening to you. Fact is, it happens to everyone..

In my experience though, it's not "cool" to do the correct or moral thing so that may be where you're finding some pain.

That is what I learned in Catholic school. To eat babies. That is why I am having my own. Yummmm.

  • I remember in High school some dumb *** who found out I was Wiccan started up with "Witches eat their babies." I couldn't help but wonder, what are you... freaking 4?
  • I'm sensing a pattern here. When people think one's religion is evil, do they automatically use the "But they eat their babies!" line??

No, silly, that's what we Jews do.  I am still fattening my baby up and looking at recipes.

Is that why some Catholics don't believe in birth control?  lol j/k

  • Well they are apparently the other other white meat.
  • Oh great.  As if pregnancy doesn't bring out enough worries

I now have to worry about the Wiccan/Jews/Catholics trying to steal my baby and eat it!   lol

And that's why some of us get upset when a majority of people, influenced by their Conservative Christian beliefs, vote as a group to take away the rights of the few.  It's called the tyranny of the majority, and that's why the Supreme Court exists -- not to sit as "activist judges," just to make sure that democracy doesn't suffocate the rest of us.  So as long as Conservative Christian groups (not all Christians, not necessarily YOU if you happen to be a Christian) continue to curtail such things as basic civil rights, reproductive rights, human rights, and voting rights, I'll continue to take issue with them.

Look back at the past 100 years of US history and you'll see that it was mostly Conservative Christians groups who staunchly protested:

    • desegregation (even most southern churches had separate congregations, buildings, etc for blacks!)
    • the decriminalization of homosexual sex (not the right the marry, god forbid, just the right to make love in the privacy of your own home)
    • the right to use contraception (pre-abortion rights -- we're talking condoms and the pill)
    • the right of African-Americans to vote (elaborate schemes were invented to get around voting rights laws -- pre-primaries, etc.)
    • alcohol
    • the teaching of evolution -- god forbid we teach science in science class and leave religious lessons for sunday school
On the other hand, we can thank many of the outlying religious sects (Jehovah's Witnesses, mostly) for expanding our rights to speech, expression, religious freedom, and door-to-door solicitation!

  • Well from what I can tell there are mainly two types of Christians. The kind that actually read the bible and live their lives by the word of god. Then there are the kind that have maybe been to church a few times in their lives and then hide behind the mask of Christianity. Much like the wacco wiccans out there who actually think they can control fire and turn people into frogs v.s the normal ones.
  • As I remember, black people and muslims get picked on by YOU. Boo hoo, your people are the majority and its just not good enough. Get a life.

You forgot the third type:  those who go to church every week, believe wholeheartedly in the bigotted crap they hear, and live their lives accordingly, trampling on the rest of us in a holier-than-thou fervor to righteously convert as many people as possible before the UN SecGen turns into the anti-christ, the oceans boil up, the earth rumbles and quakes, and jesus finally comes back again.  I think that's why the uber-conservatives are so dismissive about global warming -- they just think it's a sign that the end is near!

If you can't tell, I myself grew up in one of those lovely fundamentalist, so-bap churches, so perhaps I am less than objective.  I left when I discovered that Jesus would have been a peacenik socialist.

  • Silly me, I did forget those. But I chose long ago to not hate the few dozen Christians I new growing up when I got older. Yah don't get me wrong. It sucked pretty hard core to be denied the invitation to your friends birthday at the age of 6 and older, time and time again because their mothers worried I would bring tarot or ouiji or other crap into their houses.

Or how when I had birthday parties my friends weren't allowed to come because my mothers house was a heathens house and how I was going to hell and blah blah blah blah blah. Being verbally and physically assaulted because of the path that I was raised with and chose to fallow... yah I'm not exempt either.

Its not that I'm pretending they don't exist, I would just rather not harp on those few that make the rest look bad.

  • Yes, can someone who is not Christian please explain this to me?  Because aren't you pushing your beliefs on the rest of the people in the U.S. by saying you don't believe in Creationism and don't want it taught in schools, you don't believe abortion is wrong and want it to be legal?!?  Why is it okay for your beliefs to be accepted and not Christians?  I don't get it?

i'm sorry, but this post is ridiculous. if abortion is legal, Christians are not going to be forced into getting an abortion. Creationism, whether you believe it or not, just isn't science, sorry to say, and shouldn't be taught in science class. I personally would love for schools to have a religions class, but covering all religions. nice try on trying to turn the tables, but keeping religion out of our legislation is not pushing non Christian religious beliefs onto Christians, just keeping any religious beliefs from being pushed onto anyone else. you know, freedom of religion and all that jazz.

  • in response to the original post. I agree with Pumpkin, when it's your beliefs that are being criticized you take notice. Not so much when it is someone else's beliefs. So a lot of people just don't notice that every other religion is criticized just as much as theirs.

Basically, it's called the 1st Amendment:  "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion."  My "don't believes" aren't religious nor are they anti-relgious.  They are secular, just like our government is supposed to be.  So when you take your religious beliefs and try to get Congress to make them into law, that's establishing religion and I object to it.

The fact that I consider creationism to be a quack theory isn't a belief.  I don't believe in evolution either.  Evolution is not a belief system -- it's a theory for studying how life on Earth has changed over time.  So when I say that I want evolution and not creationism taught in public schools it's like saying that I want my kids to study the theory of relativity some day, but not to be indoctrinated by communists.  Apples and oranges, people.

Just because something might be "wrong" doesn't mean it should be illegal.  Do you really want to live in such an authoritarian system that what some people deem to be "wrong" suddenly becomes illegal?  We tried that with Prohibition ... didn't work.   Should cigarettes be illegal?  What about artery-clogging hamburgers?  spanking your children?  R-rated movies?  gaudy jewelry?  dirty dancing?  Essentially, illegality must be reserved for things that are both wrong and harmful to others in our society.

Like pp said, my "belief" that abortion isn't "wrong" and wanting it to be legal DOES NOT AFFECT YOU.   Your belief that abortion IS wrong and should be illegal could have disastrous consequences for thousands of women in this country if it were to be made into law again.  Should young girls be forced to give birth to the products of rape and incest?  Should a woman be forced to carry a baby to term knowing that she is risking her own life to do so?  Should a woman who just doesn't want to have a baby be forced by the state to go through the torturous pains of pregnancy and childbirth?
