calling all c-section mamas....

I just found out that I have to have a scheduled c-section.

Please bring on the good, bad and ugly to help me get prepared......

Re: calling all c-section mamas....

  • Good Luck!

    I had a schedule C-section as well.

GRANNY PANTIES!  Go get some HUGE underwear that come up past your belly button.  You'll love them.

I also bought a night shirt aka mumu that buttoned down the chest so I could nurse and didn't have anything on my belly at night

  • take all the mesh panties you can from the hospital. you can wash them and they will be fine. i am still wearing them. get a support girdle/band from the hospital too. i am still using it too. all in all it was not bad. mine was not planned, but still went well. i am not bleeding as much as the vaginal girls it seems. i guess they can clean you out better. GL
  • where did you get your granny panties from?  and your nightgown?  I guess I should investigate a nursing nightgown.

were you able to wear pants, and just chose not to?  I am so much more a PJ type girl than a nightgown.

  • i wore the hospital gowns the 4 days i was there. i went home in a dress. i didn't wear pants till i got home. they were big pants and the girdle protected my cut.
  • I had a unplanned c-section. When I went into labor they found out my little man was breech, so they immediately scheduled a c-section for me.

I would bring some lose comfy knit type pants to wear home from the hospital. I was so glad to have mine when I went home. Also have some you can wear around the house. You won't want anything rubbing up against your incision.

Also what really helped me was to get up and get moving as soon as possible after the c-section. The worst time for me was in the morning after I had not moved all night. My incinsion area would stiffen up.

Oh and keep ahead of your pain. When they offer you pain meds take them and don't wait to let youself get painful. I was a fan of the high dose Ibuprofren since it didn't make me loopy like the Percocet did. I did take my Percocet aat night though.

    Good luck with everything.

  • mine was an emer c-sec, and it went very well. i second the granny panty thing! you can get them at target. i choose to wear comfy pajama pants that i also got at target - much more comfortable for me than a nightgown.

the most "painful" thing for me was the itchiness from the morphine pain killer they gave me and the soreness in my shoulder from the air going into my system. good luck!!

  • I bought some really big pj pants from Target and they were great.  I lived in those during the day.

The granny panties - funny story... I told my mom I wanted some big panties instead of the mesh ones from the hospital.  She went to the DOLLAR GENERAL of all places and brought home some size 13 Fruit of the Loom Briefs.  OMG - they were like parachute panties!  I'm a size 16 pant size normally so I"m sure that 13's would probably fall off most of you!  but they came up to my breasts (seriously) but they were so nice and comfy.

a warning about the mesh panties... If you use Always pads (like I do), there is no way to remove the wrapper without the backing - so the pads will stick to your leg :)  so if you want the mesh panties, make sure the pads you have have a wrapper that comes off the pad but leaves the sticky backing on

  • I had a C Section after almost 24 hours of labor.  I second the granny panties. I also have a funny story about the panties. I asked my DH to get me some big panties, he bought me large and the 3x (I am normally a size 6 pants). They were so funny.  You really don't want anything near the incision. I have lived in comfy pants for the last four weeks.

Take the pain med when they offer. I also did ibprofen and then percoet at night.

Best of luck. I had complications with mine. Because I was in labor so long and pushed for 6 hours, my uterus would not shrink so I lost a lot of blood. Had to have a blood transfusion.  After getting the transfusion, I felt much better. Since yours is scheduled, all should be good.

    Best of luck...

  • I had a scheduled c-section as well, and I LOVED it. I will definitely be going for that again next time. I was petrified beforehand, I cried for days in fear of the surgery, but it was fine. I'm not going to say it wasn't painful afterwards because it was, but it was totally manageable. Good Luck and Congrats!

  • I had an emergency c-section, and I was really bummed about it. Oh well, nothing I can do about it now.

Anyway, two things that haven't been mentioned - I don't know if the anesthesia is different with a planned c-section, but it pretty much immobilized me from the neck down, and as it wore off totally gave me te shakes. So there were no nice photos of me holding the baby or anything.

2 - After Milo was born, they did all the tests and everything and I didn't see him for what felt like about 15 minutes (but I could hear him crying). I was really upset, and didn't expect that. So if you think that might bother you, maybe you can ask that they show DC to you first, before starting to clean him up, weigh him, etc.

I wore the mesh panties from the hospital and a gown for three days and it was fine.

  • I had a c-section and I honestly have to say it was a great experience, so much better than I thought it was going to be.  Everyone had me scared to death w/horror stories.  The anxiety was the worst everything else was fine.  I was terrified of the spinal but it was really easy and didn't really hurt anymore than a normal shot anywhere else on your body, I think adreniline helps and blocks the pain and my nurse and doctors were amazing.  I did throw up during the procedure but it was fine and they were totally prepared for it.  I actually dozed off during the end of the surgery when they were puttihng me back together.

Please try not to worry it isn't as bad as people make it out to be.  You can e-mail me if you have any more questions or need more positive thoughts:  kerri.marsh@gmail.com
