changing daycare

I have a 17 month old who has been attending the same daycare for about 10 months now.  I have made arrangements for him to start a new daycare in exactly a month.  A few reasons, mostly I think that he has outgrown the current daycare he is in and I get the feeling he is not being stimulated enough.  There are some other things that are more subjective as well that I won't go into detail here.

How much notice would/have you given when you have changed daycares?  I don't want to leave them with a hole, but I also don't want my DS to be treated any differently (who knows?).

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am

Re: changing daycare

  • we gave notice in accordance with the policy we signed to (2 weeks).

  • What does your contract say?  We had to give two weeks notice or pay for two weeks past when we took our dd out of the center.  I think it all depends on the situation.  We told our daycare in advance, but I wasn't worried about her care changing in anyway.  My best friend, on the other hand, pulled her kid out of her daycare and told him it was his last day when she picked him up (for fear of retribution).
  • We also had to give 2 weeks notice.  You don't have to tell them why you are leaving.  I'm sure they've had people leave before and still gave the same care to the kids.  From my experience, the teachers get pretty attached to the kids and wouldn't dream of treating them any differently just because they were leaving.

  • I paid a 4 week (full time) non-refundable deposit - so I would give 4 weeks notice and use up the deposit if we were full time.  But since we are only part time now and it would take me nearly 8 weeks to use up that deposit, I'd probably give 8 weeks notice.
  • I would take a look at our contract and see if there is any obligations on my part.  I think we have a 30 day leave notice - but my daycare is through my husband's company and so we have to do some other things w/ payroll deductions and that sort of thing.

Do you pay on a weekly or monthly basis - if you don't find details in your contract, I'd tell them right before you owe the next payment...
