DC said she isn't interested in walking

I know she is content to sit and play but she will take a few steps for me when I hold her hands.  They are concerned becasue they try to get her to walk.  They said I should let her push stuff like the grocery cart.  I know she is almost a year and I am expecting to get some push toys for her first b-day.  Anything else I can do?  Again she will walk holding my hands a little.  What is normal?

Re: DC said she isn't interested in walking

  • Hmmmm, a push toy hasn't helped DD. She's been cruising since 9 months and using a push toy since around 13 months. At 15.5 months, she still isn't walking independently. They walk when they're ready...apparently up to 18 months is normal.

  • Sounds pretty normal to me.  My dd started to use a push toy right after her first b'day.  By 13 months she was walking.  She didn't do a lot of the cruising.  She just kind of got up one day and started going!

    She'll walk when she's ready.

  • I think that sounds totally normal.  DD was like that and didn't really exhibit more interest in walking until almost 14 mos when she just took off one day.  I wouldn't worry.

  • She will walk when she is ready.  Not all kids start walking at a year.  We have teh FP car walker thing that we got a few years ago for my older DD and it was great and we also got a big ball for her to play with.  She would pick it up and walk without really relizing she was walking on her own.

  • I don't see why they're so concerned. My DD didn't even cruise until 15 months and didn't walk until 18. Up to 18 months is still considered "normal" for walking. If you're concerned talk to your pedi, I did around 16 months and we had her evaluated by a physical therapist just in case, but nothing was wrong with her and now she's walking just fine.
  • My pedi said the average was 15 months and that if my DS wasn't walking until then, he would recommend that he may evaluated.  He is scooting on his butt now and stands occassionally, but overall he is very happy scooting and doesn't have much interest walking.  The scooting happened overnight, so I think the walking will too.

  • I would not worry - all babies are different. ?My niece did not walk until she was 15 months old. ?I have also heard stories of babies showing no interest in walking then standing up one day out of the blue and taking steps. Your DD looks very happy and healthy : )
