How do you keep a pumping schedule while working??

I've been back to work for 3 weeks on a part-time schedule 3 days/week.  I am a HR manager and I have a private office, so pumping should be easy - just shut the door and do what I have to do. Unfortunately I am having the toughest time sticking to a schedule.  It just seems like everytime I'm supposed to be pumping I either get called into a meeting or I have an employee wander in to my office.

My goal is to continue pumping through the end of the year and then begin weaning come January when I come back to work full-time.  I'm afraid that my crazed pumping sessions are going to effect my supply.

How do you stick to a schedule?

  • I used to put my pump times in my calendar.  Also, if employees stopping by is an issue, you may want to pump somewhere else - do you have a mother's room at your company?  If you don't have anywhere else to pump, put some sort of sign on your door.

  • I also put my pumping time on my cal, so for one it reminds me to go and 2nd if anyone is trying to plan a meeting they can see I am blocked out for that time frame. I pump twice a day, 10:30 and 2:30. I go to a mom;s room to pump.   I would make a sign on your door that state that you are busy during certain times of the day, or just flat tell your employees to leave and that you have to pump.  There is two of us on our team at work that BF and they know that we have certain times that we leave to pump.

  • I put the pumping times on my schedule as private appointments.  I don't remember if someone on the nest suggested it or if it was another message board.  It worked well.  People would schedule around that time or else ask me if they could schedule something.  At least then I could adjust my pumping appointment to accommodate the meeting.

  • When I first started back to work, I blocked out time on my schedule for pumping.   I would schedule meetings around that time.  I love my job and what I do, but pumping for my baby is a priority.  My boss supports me in this, which is a big help.  I feel comfortable saying, I just can't meet at X time.   I've been back for 8 weeks and I don't block out the time anymore, but I usually will review my schedule either before I leave or when I first come in to make sure that there are 20 - 30 minute blocks of time for me to pump first thing in the morning, mid day and late afternoon.
