hates the seatbelt

My ds hates being seat belted in more and more. He finds a way to finagle his arms out of the arm straps. Is this common? I know he prefers to be walking/running around than strapped down but its been a struggle lately.

Re: hates the seatbelt

  • Is he fitted properly in the seat?  Is the chest strap secure in the right position?  Is he moving it around to get out of it or undoing the straps?

You might have to do consequences or rewards.  Explain to him that in order to ride in the car he has to keep his straps on to stay safe.  Mommy has her straps on, daddy has his straps on, etc.  It keeps everyone safe.  His straps are different because he's not big enough yet for the same straps as mommy and daddy.  If he gets out of the straps then may e you'll have to pull over everytime and restrap him in.  Consequences might be tough to figure out, as you can't not go to daycare or the grocery store, etc.  You can turn around and not go to the park, or the kids museum, etc.  So maybe if he keeps his arms strapped in, he gets a sticker, and after x number of stickers, he gets a cheap toy or special treat or what not.  That being said, I'd check his fit first.  It shouldn't be easy for him to get his arms out.  Get the carseat out and re-fit him in the house where you can have the manual out and enough light to see what you are doing.

  • I can not imagine how he is getting his arms out if the chest clip in properly in place, unless he is moving it down himself.

Random google search image for "proper use of car seats":

If he's buckled in properly, I'm sorry that I don't have any other advice for you.

  • DH and I talked tonight about double checking the straps/set up. We may need to start there. Thanks for your ideas.

kgs--I have been having that convo with DS about safety. I will just keep reinforcing. Its been a new thing and I am hoping I can nip it in the bud.

  • Ours is like that at times especially if he is not ready to leave.  When we are going some where that he wants to go to he complies really nicely.

Yes, thats pretty much what I am dealing with. Some days he is completely compliant. It seems like its more for long car rides.
