advice about GD?

Hello there, I took my one hour test on Thursday and it came back that my levels were at 215.. Is that high?? So when I went for my 3 hour this morning they stopped me right before I was going to drink the great orange kool aid saying that since it was over 200 they were going to have me just see a educator instead. I was super bummed:( Can anyone give me some heads up on what I should be eating.. All I keep thinking about is ice cream and cheese cakes:( HELP!! Anyone have any advice on what they are going to make me do or what i can eat would be so helpful!! Thanks!

  • That is high. I can't exactly remember what the cut off number was...maybe 125 or so. I failed my 2-hour by a few points. Once you meet with the nutritionist they will give you all the info you need. Basically you have to watch the carbs that you eat (breads, pastas, starchy foods, etc). For me I have to eat 3 meals a day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) and 3 snacks (one after breakfast, one after lunch, and one right before I go to bed). Then I test my blood sugar 4 times a day (right when I wake up, 2 hours after breakfast, 2 hours after lunch, and 2 hours after dinner). My sugar has to be between 65 and 130. I am allowed 30 grams of carbs with each meal and snack and one meal I get 45 carbs. All these numbers will be set when you meet your dietician. I've been able to control my blood sugar with diet so far so it's easy to do. You just have to plan each meal and snack. Good luck!

  • Hi there, and welcome. Typically, the 1 hour test requires you to be below 130. Anything over 200 most doctors will skip the 3 hour and go straight to a diagnosis. The good news, meeting with the diabetes educator will help immensely. They will teach you how to test your sugars, and create a meal plan for you that will help you know how much to eat and when. Also, nothing is really off limits (except regular soda and most juices). You not only can, but SHOULD have things like carbs, dairy, etc. It's just a matter of how much of each thing you are allowed and balancing everything with protein. So, you may (depending on how your body responds to dairy) be able to still eat ice cream at night. It's just keeping it to a small amount. And you'll know more about how much of each you should be eating after your class and once you start regularly testing your blood sugar. Good luck!

  • Listen to your GD educator and do what they tell you. As long as you follow the directions, you and baby will be OK.

And start eliminating obvious sources of high sugar now like sweets, cakes, sodas etc.

Everyone is different when it comes to GD so there will be a bit of trial and error when you first start on the plan, and it can be frustrating, but just keep working with your specialists and know that you are doing it all for the health of your baby.
