Postpartum Depression

Who to see about PPD

I think I may have PPD...something is going on, anyway. Who did you see about it? I have an unrelated appointment with my OB/gyn this week and think I should mention it, but not sure if I should try to see a family practice also?

I'm going to my OB for my 6-week PP appointment on Wednesday, and I'm going to mention my PPD/PPA then.  From everything I've heard, you should contact your OB.

You need to ask for a psychiatrist, not a family physician or OB. I would call your OB to get meds initially or to get a referral, but that's it.

A lot of people are scared to see a psychiatrist because they think it's like the "crazy doctor" or something. A psychiatrist is just a specialized physician. Look at it this way - would you want your family physician to perform open heart surgery on you? Or do a lasik procedure? No, you'd want a specialist to take care of that. That's what a psychiatrist does with medicines for anxiety and depression.
