Hi all, I am very new to the IVF side so I hope you don't mind me asking a question here. If I'm on the wrong board, please let me know. I unexpectadly over-stimmed during a TI cycle and we had to convert to IVF. My ER was on Saturday (25 follicles removed, 18 mature, 8 fertilized) and was told on Sunday that I will be doing a Day 3 transfer. Everything I have read says that these are not ideal and are generally done early due to embryo quality. Now of course I am freaking out.
Do we have successful Day 3 transfer ladies here? Would you mind sharing how many embies you transfered? We are trying to determine whether or not to transfer 2 at this point. I would prefer to avoid multiples, but don't want to transfer just 1 if the odds are very low to it sticking. We don't exactly have a huge budget to repeat this. Ugh, this whole process is so confusing and having only 2 days to absorb and prepare is not helping. We were so unprepared that I didn't even know that I would be unconscious for the ER.
Anyway, I do have a call in to my doctor for more info, but of course they are taking their sweet time getting back. Any advice you could give in the meantime would be appreciated.

Re: Day 3 Tranfer Ladies... can I ask a question?
Studies are inconclusive whether a 3 or 5 day transfer makes a difference. Pregnancy rates are the same for both.
I am currently KU, though barely and awaiting my second beta results, from a 3dt. I transferred 3 embryos, 2 8-cell grade one and 1 7-cell grade one. My first beta at 13dp3dt or 16dpo was 787.
We chose to put 3 back due to my age (40). I don't see your age in your post or sig. Pregnancy rates for women less than 35 for SET and DET are almost identical.
HTH.
Thanks. I'm 30 with severe PCOS. I have no idea what my egg quality is, but she feels that PCOSers don't usually make it to Day 5. Something about the eggs don't make it.
After speaking with her, she thinks we should be aggressive and transfer 2, since most day 3 will end in at least a singleton. I just am afraid that both will take and/or split and I'll be stucking with a pregnancy that I know I can't handle.
I give you ladies alot of credit. This has been one of the most difficult situations I've ever been through.

I am also 30 with PCOS And just underwent my first ivf. Before the er the dr decided he would like to transfer 12 depending on quality if we did a 3 day but would prefer transfering only 1 if it were a 5 day. I know the research at my office shows transferring two 5day blasts does not increase the chance of pregnancy but greatly increases the chance of twins. I'm unsure what the stats are for a three day transfer. If I were in your shoes and completely uncomfortable with the idea of twins I would only transfer one.
I'm curious as to what your dr said about pcos and not doing a five day transfer. I had 15 eggs retrieved, only 6 mature and 5 fertilized. I was sure we'd be having a three day. Due to high quality of 3 we made it to day 5. We decided to transfer 2 and I find out Friday if we are having twins. The third made it to freeze and the other two did not make it.
Good luck with your decision! Its a lot to think about in only 2 days!

Lurker here... Um. I think you need to pay more attention to the at least in your bolded statement. I did a 3dt and only put back one. It is now DS. I was shown the rates of success within my age group (35-37) at my clinic with 1 vs 2 embryos transferred on day 3, and I think there was about a 50% chance of twins with a DET on day 3 in successful pregnancies. That is a lot! I wasn't willing to risk it so I opted for 1, even though 2 were suggested. That said, the only reason I was called in for a day 3 transfer is that I only had 6 eggs fertilize out of 10 retrieved, and they weren't sure how many would make it to day 5 since it was my first IVF and I was on the older side. It turns out that 1/6 became DS, and another 3/6 made it to nice looking blasts good enough to freeze on day 5 to 6, so I had a pretty good rate of survival. I am pretty sure I would have twins right now if I had put back 2.
This is an incredibly hard decision, and I was only comfortable going the SET route once I made sure that I could afford to do IVF more than once.
IVF #1 ET 1 d3 embryo 10/30/11 BFP

Thank you all for your responses. They were all super helpful. For some reason, I had a lot of trouble getting on here yesterday, so I appologize for not responding back sooner.
We had our transfer yesterday afternoon and what an event that was. A new doctor did my transfer and he did not agree with my doctor's advice on a 3-day transfer. He did make a good case about being more aggressive and transfering 2, which we ended up doing. Now I pray that we made the right choice.
Thank you all again!

Thanks Rachey and Google! I ended up transfering 2 on Day 3. Out of all my embies, only 2 made it to freeze.
Now, I'm 6dp3dt and am freaking out over the 2WW. I have no symptoms whatsoever and am convinced it has failed. First betas are Friday 8/2. I caved and took a cheapie test today and it was inconclusive. There was a shadow of a 2nd line, but I'm not convinced it actually meant anything.
