Trying to Get Pregnant

Spotting starting 2dpo until period?

Question for you wise ladies:

3 months out of the 8 I have been TTC I have now had brown spotting from 2dpo until I get my period 8-10 days later.  When I mentioned this to my OB during my normal check-up she went ahead and ran bloodwork/tests per my siggy and decided I have weak ovulation and wanted me to do Clomid, which I declined due to your advice here.  Since I declined she just gave me a referral to a RE.

What would TTC do in my shoes?  I obviously cannot get pregnant if I start spotting 2 days after O.  The other 5 months I usually start spotting day 7 or 8dpo.  Thanks!

Re: Spotting starting 2dpo until period?

  • I'm not an expert, but I'm wondering why your OB is jumping on the Clomid train without trying to figure out what exactly is the problem.

From what I understand, "weak ovulation" just means something ain't working right. It could be that you're not producing enough FSH to make large enough follicles (and then, yes, Clomid might help), or it could be that your follicles are fine and dandy, but you don't produce enough progesterone to sustain an implanted embryo--in which case progesterone supplementation would help.

So why isn't your OB trying to figure these things out? My guess is because she's just an OB. I'd go to the RE with these questions and try to get them sorted out before being put on something serious like Clomid. Good for you for declining it. I would have at this point, too.

  • Definitely try to get a second opinion to a different Ob/gyn. I went to a different doc because of a similar experience and the new doc took blood work that tested all of my hormone levels. No doctor should be making conclusions without providing further testing. It was a good thing you did not start taking medication. Def go see another ob/gyn and ask lots of questions. You deserve the best care.
  • They have tested it at 7dpo when I was not yet spotting (started the next day) and it was a 6.  I have read that anything higher than a 5 shows ovulation but it should really be above a 10.

You were definitely smart to decline the Clomid from your OB.

Did you just come off of hormonal birth control 8 months ago?

Thanks!  It's hard to say no to someone who is the "professional!"

I came of BC 2 years ago.
