Newborn first doc appt?

The hospital told me I should get Draven into our doc office within 4 days of being dismissed. We don't have a pediatrician but have taken DD there since birth, its our family doctor. Well, Friday after I was dismissed, I called to set up an appt and they want to wait 2 weeks because of so many illnesses going around. She said they have been packed every day and don't want him to be exposed, which I totally understand that part of it. I'm just wondering ladies, did you get your baby into the doc right away or wait?

We took our baby to the pedi two days after we were dismissed from hospital. They wanted us to make an appointment within the first week of being home just for them to do a weight check, measurements and to go over any questions we had since being home with her.

  • We got in right away. I think it's important to do a weight check before the 2 week visit. Can they make you have the first appointment of the day before any sick visits?
  • We followed the hospital's instructions.

Can you ask your family doctor for the very first appointment of the morning? That way you can get in and out before the crowds.

    Edit: I wasn't done TB!

  • With my second, we had to wait 2 weeks for the actual pedi because of some weird illness going around too.

However, all the hospital really wanted was a weight/jaundice check anyways..so we took LO back to the maternity ward and the nurses just weighed/looked for jaundice there.

    Is that an option?

  • We had our Pedi visit each of the 3 days we were in the hospital (Cesarian), and then at 5 days pp, had a check up at the hospital with a LC who did a weight check as well. We were told to get LO to his pedi for first appointment between 7-14 days. I'm guessing it's because of all the check ups and visits he already had?
  • They wanted us to go in 2 days after discharge. They wanted to check his weight, and make sure he was eating good. Also, they wanted to make sure he wasn't getting jaundice.

I would schedule an appt. and ask for one of the first appts. of the day. And keep him covered while you are in there.

  • We were released on a Monday and had an apt on Tuesday. Had we not been dealing with jaundice we would have gone on Wednesday and had no issue going in.

  • Both my kids had jaundice so we had pedi appointments the day after leaving the hospital. I actually made the appts while still in the hospital.
  • We were told the pediatrician likes to see the baby within 2-3 days of being discharged.  We made an appt for 2 days, and then we went in 2 days after that when DS was a week old.  Our next appt is tomorrow for his 2wk appt.  They basically just do a brief assessment and a weight check.  It's important for them to make sure the baby is gaining weight.  They check the umbilical cord and circumsicion at these times too.  I would try to be seen by someone.  Maybe make an appt for first thing in the morning when the office is most clean?

We see a pediatrician. We were discharged from the hospital on a Thursday, and his pediatrician appointment was Friday. Normally, they would have wanted to see him two days after being discharged, but they didn't want to wait all the way until Monday, which would have been four days after discharge. Luckily, our pediatrician has separate waiting areas: a well waiting area and a sick waiting area.

We were released on Saturday at noon, and we were at the doctor on Monday morning. I had a very small baby though, so he didn't have any weight to lose. I also had to take him back three days after the first appointment for another check up. I would want my baby to be seen before two weeks. I think it's important.
  • I'm in canada and have a family dr. We saw her at one week. However she did the delivery too and saw our LO before she agreed to release us.
  • We were released on Sunday and saw the pediatrician on Tuesday. We are going back this coming Tuesday, a week later, for a weight check and to answer any questions that may have come up.

  • DD was jaundice so she literally went to the pedi every day for 4 days after we were released from the hospital to monitor the condition. If your doctor's office doesn't appear to be concerned about seeing her right away, than I wouldn't worry about it. Unless you notice an issue with your baby or something, then I would demand to be seen right away.

    Anniversary

  • Right away but since I wanted to get out of the hospital ASAP after the birth it was a requirement for early discharge.  He was also showing signs of being jaundice.

They scheduled the first appt. (2 days after discharge) for us at the hospital.

  • We were told to have the appointment the next day or the day after that.  Our pediatrician could get us in the next day, so that's when we went.
  • DD had to come home on the Bili light, because of this we had nurses come to our house daily to do weight checks, and to draw blood.  Even with the daily home checks, my pedi still wanted to see us for the routine appointment during our first week home.
