Toddlers: 24 Months+

Moms of tots with glasses...

DD is 3 years old and wears glasses. I have spent a fortune in glasses because she keeps breaking them. The last pair she had for 3 days before she broke them. I have no idea what to do. I've tried every type of punishment that is humane! Is there a brand of frames that are toddler tough? How do you keep your child from breaking their glasses? Any advice?
I prayed for this child, and the LORD has granted me what I asked of him. 1Samuel 1:27 Image and video hosting by TinyPic Lilypie Third Birthday tickers Lilypie First Birthday tickers Team Peeta Tag Pictures, Images and Photos

Re: Moms of tots with glasses...

  • DD is 4 and has had glasses since she was 2 1/2. Fortunately, we have only had one major break when the arm completely broke. The others have been lenses falling out, scratches and basic adjustments. She is on her second pair. I decided to go to a "higher end" optical store over a cheaper place and we spend on average 100120 for the frames not including lenses/rx. With her lenses, which are pretty complex, we spend about 300. The pair she has now are Jessica McClintock and are great. We get wire frames instead of the plastic ones since they seem to have more give and can be reshaped easily. The store also has a year long replacement plan that repairs or replaces anything except for lost glasses and includes an adjustment or fitting any time we go in for free. I paid 30 for this coverage and it has been well worth it! I make a point to take her in at least every 4 to 6 weeks for an adjustment and to get all the screws tightened and everything straightened back out. No, we don't get the buy one pair, get a second free deals or the 60 pair of glasses deals but we get a solid pair of glasses and great service along with it.
From the very beginning we stressed the importance of taking care of her glasses. We let her pick out her cases and her cleaning clothes. She is responsible for taking them off and placing them in one of two designated spots when it is nap or bedtime or if she and her brother are playing rough, etc.
I would try and take a praise for good behavior/ care of her glasses instead of her getting in trouble when she isn't taking care of them.

  • DS doesn't wear them, but my students who wear them have insurance to replace if they break.

  • My middle guy got glasses at age 18 months.  We have always gone with flexible metal frames.  I believe the brand is Flexon.  Like the PP said, we have to go in to have them adjusted about every 4 weeks.  My son is good about wearing them and pretty careful with them but he is not overly gentle when putting them on and taking them off.  Not to mention the rough housing with his siblings!  We are on our third pair of glasses but only had one actually break (when his little sister pulled them off).  He outgrew the other pair.  I just constantly remind him to be careful with his glasses and to try to be mindful about wear he puts them when he takes them off.
