Pregnant after IF

update and SCH questions?

Again, thank you all for the kind words, thoughts and prayers for me and the little ones.

The bleeding last night was a huge gush of red blood (soaked the pantyliner i was wearing from the crinone discharge) when i noticed it and then was flowing down my legs, hubby was literally walking in the door saw my face while i was on hold with the dr. answering service and told me to get in the car.  My ob's ER is 30 minutes away so we went to our neighborhood hospital 5 minutes away.  I have to say that the hour in the ER was horrible.  Just too much time left to think.  everything got better when i saw the 2 heartbeats.

They found a SCH measuring  3.68 x 0.77 x 2.9 cm but did not tell me where it was.  They are saying this is what caused the bleed.  I am still going to NT scan with MFM Monday morning and then will call my regular OB to see when I can get in there as well.

SCH girls:  does this sound large? small?  medium?  From everything I am reading, 11w3d is kind of late for an SCH to show?  most i am reading about are at 6 weeks.  Any ideas?

Re: update and SCH questions?

  • I'm so sorry you're going through this, I know how scary it is. I had an sch with my twin pregnancy and several very heavy scary bleeds where ended up in the ER. (My twin pregnancy was complicated, not due to sch, for many other reasons). When I went to MFM, she basically could care less about sch. She is a top MFM at one of top hospitals in the country, said she wrote papers on sch and almost always, no complications and told us its scary because of the bleeding, but not to worry. Was put  on pelvic rest, and was told to increase water intake. Around 14 weeks I had my last big bleed and then that was it. Again, none of my problems in that pregnancy were sch related. But it does scare the life out of you when it happens!

  • That is a meduim size SCH it really matter where the SCH is as to whether its a big problem or not. My first SCH was between the membrane which is considered dangerous because it can cause separation and then you can lose the pregnancy. If its near the cervix it most likely will bleed out or reabsorb eventually. I had 4 SCH all bled and I was on bed rest for weeks because the one between the membrane kept getting bigger and bigger until it went from one end of the sac to the other. However after being on br it finally started to shrink at 16 weeks. When you see the MFM they should be able to give you more info. Take it easy until then gl

  • I had an u/s on a Monday at 9 weeks 6 days and everything looked perfect.  Thursday night I heard/felt a pop and gush! All night long I bled. I knew the ER couldn't do anything and DH and I prepared ourselves for no HB at the OBs the next morning.  They found the HB on the Doppler and then found the SCH on the u/s.  my OB says its normal for them to pop up about this time as the placenta is forming and sometimes forms incorrectly causing the bleed. I bled all that night and then had some brown spotting a couple weeks later. But I was really good and took it as easy as I could with a toddler.  Thankfully friends and family helped us out that first week.  They called my SCH a 6 which i was told was HUGE for 10 weeks.  Then we had an u/s at 12 weeks the NT scan and found out the bleed had shrunk to a 3, by half, but even better by that point the baby and water sack was bigger than the bleed. It's actually better if it comes out.  I will admit I check the TP Every. Single. Time. I. Pee.

i am thrilled this was what was happening to you and not a m/c (wish I didn't happen at all of course)!!!  Good luck!

  • SCH's are scary!  I'm sorry you had to experience one.  I had one at 6 weeks, and then bled again at 10 weeks.  By the NT scan it had gotten smaller and by the anatomy scan it was gone completely.  My OB and RE both said that they are rarely ever a cause for concern for them--- they just make us worry :)  I hope that you get more information tomorrow and have an uneventful rest of your pregnancy!
  • How scary!  I am glad that your babies are doing good & you have an answer as to what happened.  I am sure tomorrow can't get here fast enough for you.  Going by what my nurse told me, it sounds like a medium SCH.  She said that they can appear at any time.  I was told no heavy lifting, drink lots of water & stay off my feet as much as possible.  My life does not allow much of this right now but I am doing what I can.  I hope you get some answers on Monday that can put your mind at ease.

  • 3.68cm is medium I think.   My SCH with DS made its gushing debut at 10w2days and I was getting weekly u/s with the RE still, so we don't know if it was just missed or formed late.   By my NT scan around 12 weeks it was 6.9cm x 3.4cm and baby's CRL was 5.9cm.   The worst of my bleeding was over by 16 weeks, spotted until about 20 and it was fully resolved by 24 weeks.
