High-Risk Pregnancy

MTHFR..when can I feel I am in the safe zone?

Does risk of miscarriage go down at all during pregnancy if you have MTHFR? Not sure which one I have.. just know that I have MTHFR.

I know that in regular pregnancy the risk drops a lot after you heart HB and then after 1st trimester..

For those of us with MTHRF, does the risk stay the same the whole pregnancy?  When are we in the "safe zone"?

  • Determining "which one you have" and whether you are homozygous or heterozygous would be one of the first steps in answering your question.

Assuming you have a genotype that is clinically significant, you would want to know about your homocycteine level as regards risk of forming blood clots, and perhaps more importantly, be sure that you are on L-methylfolate supplementation to help prevent congenital defects (such as spinal cord malformations and congenital heart disease).  If you aren't on a specialized prenatal, talk to your OB ASAP.

  • Try to remember that 40-60% of the world's population has "a" MTHFR mutation, so the critical issue is which one (or more) do you have and how many copies.  Just the presence of "a" mutation doesn't really increase your risks--as likely more than half the world' population has at least one mutation.  The specifics are everything with MTHFR.
