Immunizations

Need some advise, Our daughter just turned 1 and is up for her second round of shots (she already had all of the necessary ones before)

This time around my husband raised a question on why we're even doing this, besides the scare we have from our doctors and society that its necessary... do we really need to have her injected with these chemicals?

When I ask myself the question, I say yes I think she does because what if somehow somewhere she is in contact with someone who has something that she should've been vaccinated for and then ends up getting it and getting really sick? Also I feel like since she's already had them the first go around, why not continue the schedule?

But then I wonder if its necessary and if in the long run, we're ruining her immune system? What are some of your thoughts on this?

Re: Immunizations

  • Seriously? My thoughts on this is that your husband needs to do some research, STFU, and allow your baby to be vaccinated.

You know what is really hard on your immune system?

    Polio.

    That's a pretty great response.

  • No. You are not ruining her immune system by vaccinating. Get her vaccinated.

  • Gotta be mud.

But then again I like to pretend we live in a world where idiots that think like this don't exist. You know, until you read stories about kids dying from totally preventable diseases.

honestly...do the research for yourself. I felt like we were being bullied into vaccinating and after A LOT of research and soul searching we decided on a delayed and one by one schedule. We started at 4 months with just dtap because there was a break out in our town. My dd had her 3rd dtap at 9months.  She will be starting her next vaccine at 15months. She is in the 10% for weight and I do not feel comfortable with bombarding her little body with all types of poison. We  still BF and I am comfortable with how protected my dd is.

I am not comfortable with any vaccines that I was not given as a child, especially nothing created past 2000. Those children have barely reached puberty let alone adulthood and I do not want my child to be guinea pig.

  • Yes, you absolutely should vaccinate your LO. Do a delayed schedule if that  makes you more comfortable, but please, vaccinate. Those diseases are nothing to mess around with. Think of parents centuries ago who lost their children to polio or mumps. I'm sure they would have given anything for their child to have been able to be vaccinated.

Breastfeeding does not protect your child from mumps, measles, rubella, polio, and all the other deadly diseases for which we have vaccinations.

Vaccines aren't poison. They're flucking MIRACLES. My grandfather, who nearly died from polio and was permanently crippled from it, would have given anything for a vaccine.

Have you ever seen small pox? Google it. Then go ahead and let me know if you want to take the chance of your child contracting that disease.

Vaccines are rigorously tested. Your child is not a guinea pig. You, however, are an idiot.

I think until your husband gets his MD or PhD in biomedical science, or he actually decides to read legitimate references that he should keep his wisdom to himself and listen to your pedi.

  • Do your own research!  Most people are going to tell you to do it and there are a few that will tell you not too!  Do what you think is personally best for your kid!

  • I'm delaying my DD's vaccines, but our reason is due to family members having reactions and becoming mentally impaired because of it. (Cousin is mentally challenged due to the MMR) I'm also allergic to some things in the vaccines.

Even when people don't vax, they rely on us that do for herd immunity. I get that a lot of people don't want to inject their child with foreign substances and that is there choice, but I don't see how it's any different than taking an antibiotic or any other medication.

But PLEASE if you decide that it is best for YOUR offspring to not be vaccinated, keep them AWAY from infants, elderly, and immunocompromised people!

All of this! It is your choice, but do your research and make an informed decision. Also keep in mind that if you choose not to immunize, there are more repercussions than your child being at risk of contracting a serious illness. As you see this is a very heated and emotional debate, some activities like play groups, sports, classes and social functions may be hindered because there's a risk to some people with immune issues if your child isn't vaccinated. If you feel not immunizing out weighs all of the risks involved then that's your choice.

  • We did the DR. Sears modified schedule and our pedi was extremely supportive. Since I was on my first round of the HPV vac when I was 16 and my cousin was in her second also at 16 and she ended up in a coma within hours of the vac, I'm very cautious. I did not go back for my second two series. Although the vacs are tested, some of them haven't ran through a whole generation yet. I understand your apprehension. Also, it's not about the individual vaccine being tested, some of them haven't been tested in combination with the other vaccines given at the same time. Do your research and decide for yourself is my advice.

The only problem here is that your information still is wrong. Mmr does not cause autism or mental disorders. They are not risk proof but the benefits outweigh the risks

This is actually incorrect. She is probably referring to the MMR vaccine they gave back in the 1980's that was whole cellular. They are now a-cellular. My cousin received the MMR in 1988 and was severely impacted by it. She cant speak, see, hear, etc. My aunt actually had to go testify in D.C. and was approved by the CDC as a vaccine damaged child.

There is an entire trust fund set up for vaccine injured kids. It has paid out more than 2 billion dollars and has around 3 billion dollars in reserves. Because of this trust fund, you are legally unable to sue the vaccine manufacturer and in 2011, the Supreme Court ruled that Americans have no recourse in civil court even if the vaccine manufacturer could have made a safer vaccine.

Aside from all the information you've already gotten here (which I don't want to downplay, it is all very significant), if your child is not up to date on their vaccinations without a good reason, they will most likely not be able to go to school. Are you planning on homeschooling?

Actually in most states you can file for an exemption.  It all depends on your states laws for vaccinations.

  • I want to reiterate what PPs said about vaccines being thoroughly tested before they're released to the public.  This has been the case for decades.  My mom was part of the clinical trials for the polio vaccine.  She still resents that she got the placebo, probably because, you know, she knew people who had freaking polio.

And really, the doctors and scientists I know are some of the smartest, hardest-working people I know.  I find it incredibly disrespectful to the profession to doubt the advice of people who gave the best years of their young adult lives to intensive study, research, residencies, and learning how to read medical research (which, just because you can read and may even be highly educated, you don't know how to do unless you've been trained to do it - I have two master's degrees and I can read a humanities article but I am smart enough to know I do not know how to read a scientific study) just because of wispy feelings you have about chemicals, random-azz websites you Googled on the Internet, etc.  If you think vaccines "ruin the immune system," I can't necessarily explain all sciency-like to you why you're wrong, but it's pretty damn obvious to me you don't even have the remotest grasp of the kind of knowledge you would need to make this determination.
