Enema?

Anyone do one in late 3rd trimester? Not to induce but because of horrible constipation and nothing is working. I know any non medical "induction" won't work unless the body is ready, just at 37 weeks I want LO to cook longer and wondering if anyone has used one with or without any trouble? I honestly don't know what else to try at this point in terms of constipation

Re: Enema?

  • What did your OB say?

  • I would call your doc for this one.
  • I had an appointment yesterday and forgot to ask along with some other questions. Called my OB and they're to lunch so figured I'd see if anyone had experience while I was waiting for a call back Definitely not going to just go off of whatever someone posts and getting OB's opinion but was curious.

  • Call dr for sure!but I have battled with constipation this whole pregnancy and I have found that a daily stool softener and prune juice work wonders!

This exactly. No experience here. Also, maybe try some colace?

  • I've taken colace but never on a daily basis, usually just a couple of its been a few days and then by the next ill have a BM. Is it better to do one daily to make sure things keep moving?

  • What are you doing now for the constipation?

Tons of water, fruits n veggies, walking and then of I go more than 4 day I take a couple colace which usually works. However not so much anymore.

You can take it daily depending on how things are running, which it sounds like could be useful in this case. No harm in trying. Good luck!

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but baby doesn't come out of your butt and so I don't think an enema would induce.

  • Omg, you poor thing, I think I would be pretty darn unhappy if I didn't go every day or two. I would be worried about getting hemroids!!

Besides asking about the enema, and double check on the colace, although I took it for two weeks in the beginning... here's something's I've been doing since the first trimester that can help:

Liquid calcium magnesium, found at health food stores. This also helps ease heart burn and muscle cramps. This works really really well.

Adding a probiotic never hurts if your digestive system is ever off balance, find a good refrigerated type. I use them if I get diarrhea, the flu, after antibiotics, yeast infections or if I'm constipated.

Prune juice mixed with other fruit juice to mask the taste daily can help! They sell them in handy small cans.

Sprinkle flaxseed on foods like cereal or yogurt. Watch your white carbs, noodles, breads, rice. Switch to whole grain.

Other mamas find other beverages, usually caffeinated can help move things along....

And then dietary fiber pills, psysillium husk. Metamucil brand. Daily if your having issues.
  • I've also read here that a lot of women say watermelon is helping them stay regular.

  • Why would you jump to an enema? That would be the last thing on my mind. Try apple juice, kiwis, grapes, colace, miralax, milk of magnesia (it will work overnight). I would NOT give myself an enema before trying all these things!

All these are included in what I have tried minus the mirilax and MOM which I figured if the colace wasn't working those wouldn't either and enema seem like a no fail option. MOM always seemed to get mixed reviews from what I've read but maybe ill try that and then a daily colace.

Seriously kiwi used to be my go to, 2 a day and no problems at all, grapes and cherries also but since about 33 to 34 weeks with still doing all of these my system just seems to be getting slower and slower. Trust me an enema is not something I'd look forward to or look to if anything else would work

  • I would start with coffee and prune juice (not mixed together). Dairy (ie: ice cream) also has a laxative effect.
