Traveling - Gates

Any suggestions for a gate that you can travel with? We are going away in a week and I'd like to bring something to attempt to block off the stairs where we're staying.

We only have mounted gates in our house - do you know of any good tension gates that you can just take with you and don't involve any installation?

Thanks!!

Re: Traveling - Gates

  • Thanks for your kindness, but Julia took a spill down some stairs on our last vacation a few weeks ago (I was standing two feet away from her and she still managed it) and I still haven't quite recovered from that experience (although she long since has).

I'd prefer for her not to fall down anymore stairs anytime soon.

  • She knows how to go down the stairs. We let her go up/down the stairs all the time when we're with her.

She tripped near some stairs on our last vacation (as mentioned earlier) and took a dive head first onto some tile. She wasn't trying to go down the stairs, but as there wasn't anything to block her - that happened.

So - thanks for all of the other advice, but I'm really just looking for some baby gate suggestions here!

Tension gates are sold every where. Any would work to block the base of the stairs. None are easy to travel with. As was stated before, don't put them at the top of the stairs. I think that is actually worse than nothing because LO can get a false sense of security when hanging on it while playing, etc..
  • If the staircase is wide, bring a fabric pressure mounted gate like evenflow soft and wide travel gate or safety 1st wide fabric gate. These pack up pretty small. If the staircase is narrow, bring [or buy there], the cheap wood pressure mounted gates found at Walmart or target for around 10, or the plastic ones that are around 20.
  • What about the North States Superyard?  We just bought this one to block LO from the fireplace...

You can break it into sections, so you don't have to use the whole thing.  My aunt has the same one, and she uses it to block her stairs when her grandkids visit.

I wouldn't buy a gate and travel with it.  I would buy a gate when I got to the vacation spot (assuming it's not a remote location you should be able to find a Walmart or something).

OR, another suggestion and what we usually do because I'm super anal about stairs is we put the pack n play or move a piece of furniture at the bottom of the stairs so they can't go up and we just don't let them play upstairs anywhere.

For the top of the stairs I usually put a pack n play in front so at least it sort of protects them from the top of the stairs.   Good luck!
