Hemp inserts too rough for baby's bum?

I just received my first hemp inserts and reusable wipes from AMP and followed all the washing instructions, so they've been washing and dried 4 times now.  They seem a little rough to me for putting right against baby's bum, which we are mainly planning to do (putting on top, not in pocket).  I'm wondering are they supposed to be a little rough or am I just thinking a baby's bum is more sensitive than it is?  We also have some Applecheeks bamboo inserts and the difference in texture is crazy!  Any advice on the hemp?  Maybe we should just use the hemp for pockets only and order babmoo for the rest of our inserts to go against the bum.  Need some feedback from experienced CD mamas please!

  • If you're looking for a hemp insert that is nice and soft to put right against your LO's skin I would try Thirsties hemp prefolds. Just like bamboo there are a lot of different kinds of hemp, hemp fleece, hemp jersey, etc. Some are just softer than others.

  • I'm not the biggest fan of Thirsties' hemp. I like the JoeyBunz premium inserts, but they're definitely not cheap. The top layer of them is very soft. Personally though, I haven't had the best luck with hemp directly against skin; not because of the texture, but because of the slow rate of absorbency. I like cotton or bamboo as a first layer, I pretty much only use hemp when I need a doubler. My indifference toward hemp is a fairly UO though ;)
