Sleep training...part 2?

DS who is 12.5 months old used to be great at going to bed on his own. We did the whole Ferber CIO thing. The first night he cried for 45 minutes, the next night 20, then 10, then after that he'd cry maybe a minute or two as I was leaving his room but that was it. Usually he'd just move around and then go to sleep.

Last week we were on vacation. His schedule got all screwed up and nighttime usually ended up having one of us rock him. He was sleeping in his PNP, in an unfamiliar place, etc. Problem is, now that we are home he will not go to bed on his own again. He is also teething and we are doing a soy challenge this week so I'm hesitant to just let him scream for 45 minutes again bc I worry it could be his teeth or tummy hurting him too. Any tips on how to handle this? Do we just dive back into it head first like we'd never done it in the first place? I don't know why but hearing him this upset now makes ME more upset than it did the last time!

    This is what I don't get about sleep training you always have to start over when you go on vacation/get sick/teethe, etc.nbsp;I can't see how you can let him CIO when he's teething and your working on the allergy stuff. I would wait and rock him to sleep or whatever he needs. nbsp;

    For the record, not everyone who does CIO has to do it over and over again. We have never had to start over. We still rock to sleep when teething or illness are involved and when things go back to normal we go back to what we were doing which is putting him down to fall asleep on his own.

    OP I'm all for sleep training if it is what works for your family but not while big things are going on. If he's sick and having a hard time getting back into a routine I say let that settle down first before you think about doing any kind of CIO. It might just be that he doesn't feel well and it might resolve itself when he is doing better.

  • I don't think I'd have all this going on at once. I deal with allergies too so maybe hold off on the challenge until you know he's feeling well? Then you have a better idea if he's reacting to the soy.
    Since you can't control the teeth, space out the things you can control maybe. That would be my thought. Depends what is most important to you, for me it would be sleeping well then deal with the soy challenge. GL with all of it!

     This. If my LO is going through something unusual that I believe is affecting his sleep, I usually give it about three days from when he starts to feel better, and if sleep doesn't go back to normal by then, we do a bit of cio. This has happened only maybe twice since he started sttn consistently and he never cries/fusses more than 20 minutes. In my experience, it's a lot easier to get a sleep-trained baby back on track after a disturbance than it is with a non-sleep-trained baby.

    Ditto all these ladies! If he's sick or teething, we will rock him and help him get to sleep. When he's feeling okay, he goes back to putting himself to sleep. He might fuss a little bit for a night or two, but it's not a big deal at all. We even had to go as far as letting him bed-share on our recent vacation, and when we got back he went right back to sleeping in his crib with very little fussing.
