Baby Names

first impression...

Of the name Jasper?

We've had mixed reactions. I love it.

Our girl pick is Josephine with nn Effie

BTW I'm ladyduke, due in March. Do you do introductions on this board regularly?

Re: first impression...

  • introductions are usually done on "new to the bump" board or the first trimester board and you still have a long time to pick a name! lol. but congrats on your pregnancy.

I love the girl pick... I suppose I could warm up to Jasper but I know one person with that name and he's been called "Jazz" forever and that I don't like.

    Love it.

Old school. Spunky. Not common, but not weird.

    Yes

Joesephine nn Effie is pretty awesome too!

Intros aren't necessary, but always welcome. Welcome to the board! You have great taste.

    All of this!

Love Jasper and Josephine. I dont think Jasper needs a nn either. Its perfect on its own.

  • Well dang, this is the most positive feedback I've had. Thanks ladies! Our first son is Jonah, so yes, we are a J family.

  • Welcome!

I have a Josephine-- so I like your style!

I think Jasper is a quirky, cool pick for a boy. It's unusual, but not weird, easy to say and spell.  I like it.

  • Jasper sounds a little hillbilly to me. I don't hate it but wouldn't use it myself. Agree, no NN necessary. I am a little...unsure....of the nn Effie. I just can't imagine calling someone that IRL.

  • I like both your boy and girl names. I know a doctor whose first name is Jasper (and he has a hard to pronounce last name.) He actually goes by Dr. Jazz, and I think it's fun/quirky.

  • No intro needed.

Jasper, sadly, makes me think of Twilight. But I still like the name.

    I love Josephine

  • Welcome to the board!

I think Jasper is pretty awesome: classic and underused. Josephine is my favourite girl name.

  • I love Jasper and Josephine. (Effie is waaaay cute as a NN. I have never thought of it as a NN for Josephine, but I like it a lot.)

I don't mind Jasper. It sort of makes me think of an old man, but not necessarily in a bad way.
There was a girl named Jasper at our Gymboree, in a different class, and I thought that was Super Weird.
We live across the street from a Josephine. They are adamantly against nns and have had to shut it down when daycare tried to call her Josie or Jojo. I don't know what to make of Effie. Part of me thinks "interesting and different" and part of me thinks of the Beverly Hillbillies and wants to add "May" on the end of it. But I never actually watched that show, so now I'm wondering if that character was Effie May or Ellie May.
Did you say your other child was Jonah? That seems like a very different style from Jasper and Josephine. Less country.
  • Jot me down as another that loves both choices!

  • Jasper makes me think of the bad guy from 101 Dalmatians. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it is the first thought that comes to mind.

  • I really love Jasper, I wish it sounded better with my ln so I could use it! Josephine is nice, and Effie is adorable!

  • Usually I'm a fan of older names. However, Jasper is not one of them. It sounds way too old and I can't help but think of some lazy dog.
  • Wow, I never thought of Jasper or Josephine as "country" names. That's interesting though. Jasper strikes me as more of a British name, didn't even know about the Twilight character until today! The nn Effie for Josephine is actually the traditional nn along with Posey, so I can't take credit for coming up with that. I love looking 1920s names on the SS site which is where I saw Effie.  Thanks everyone for your opinions!
