Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Straining

DS is about 13 months old, and he STILL strains to go poop. He poops about 2 to 3 times a day, and 80% of the time he grunts and strains. He doesn't appear to be in pain, but he is straining really, really hard. I just wonder if it's normal or something I need to consult the pedi about.

Re: Straining

  • Is it only when he is pooping in a certain position? I remember reading in the baby books that pooping while laying down or standing up is difficult and can cause them to strain.  How do the poops look?  If they are hard small balls then he may be constipated which would explain the straining.  Is he getting enough water?  I would ask the pedi about it just to see what they suggest.

DS did this too....he still kinda does sometimes and he's 19 months. I asked the pedi about it and she recommended more fiber to see if that would help, and also prune juice.  We never ended up trying the prune juice because increasing his fiber helped most of the time, but a friend used prune juice and said it was amazing.
