Drop side crib

My SIL gave us a drop side crib that she used for her children, including her son who just moved into a big boy bed. My husband want to get an immobilizer kit to make the crib safer. Opinions? Has any used one of these kits before? Are they effective? Thanks!

Re: Drop side crib

  • I would definitely get the kit! That is what we are doing as well!

  • I have never used an immobilizer kit but I would just pass on old cribs, especially drop side cribs. They don't make them anymore for a reason.  Car seats and cribs are new purchases for me.  Other things I will buy used.  I know cribs can be costly, but I wouldn't chance it.  We got our crib and mattress for $150 on sale.  Granted we didn't purchase a super fancy crib, but it will do the job and meets safety regulations.

I didn't know there were immobilizer kits. MIL has a drop side crib that no one uses. But, the side is really high. I really don't know how I'd reach a baby without the side coming down. I'm on the shorter side (5'2"), but still, I think it might be something to consider.

  • IMO, there's a reason they don't make drop side cribs anymore.  Every parent has their own opinion on it though.  My cousins have one and their son has been sleeping in it for 2 years (since the night they brought him home from the hospital).  I think they have the immobilizer kit.

To me, like a PP said, car seats and cribs are something I wouldn't pass down (unless it was from my own child to a subsequent child).

i'm short (5'1), and definitely have trouble reaching in/out of a "regular" crib. this is why dd (17mos) has never slept in her crib. ever.

  • We were given a drop side crib to use as well but while looking up the conversion kit there was also a few other recalls. The company would not replace the recalled items as the crib was now 10 years old, and no crib older than that (I 'think') should be used anymore.

So we ended up buying a new one of course.
