GD number variations

So I've had some high numbers.

After lunch 4 pts over. After dinner 1 pt. under.

And then this morning the fasting number I got was WAY over - like 20 pts. I thought it was crazy high. So I pricked a different finger and got 81. Then tried again and got 89. I ended up thinking it must be 80s since i got two there.

But How can it vary THAT much? Has anyone else noticed this?

Re: GD number variations

  • I'm having kind of a similar issue.  My doctor gave me a meter and sample test strips but when I went to get my prescription filled for more strips and lancets, this brand wasn't covered by my insurance.  So I had to get a new meter and everything else.  I decided to compare the two and I am always under my goal with the one my doctor gave me, but the one that my insurance covers is usually 15-40 points higher which puts me over.  It's so confusing on what to trust.  I'm calling my doctor today to ask what to do.

  • In regards to the high number this morning and the two numbers in the 80's, you might've gotten a bad strip this morning.  There is also about a 10-20 pt margin of error on any machine as well....if you're worried about your numbers call your dietician/obgyn and get some advice :)

  • my meter has a solution (little blue bottle of stuff to drop on a test strip) to use to "reset" it if I keep getting weird numbers.  haven't had to use it yet though.

For your fasting variations, could be the cleanliness of your hand/finger (if there was some sort of residue on it), different fingers will test slight different sometimes, additionally I believe most meters can have something crazy like a 20% margin of error?!?!

this. I notice a crazy number if something is on my finger. I clean them and try again.

  • I have had some interesting variations, including one that went from 1.2 up to 8.1. I tested 2 more times and got numbers around 7.8 and 8.0 so took the average but the 1.2 was way out there.

I always wash my hands with just hot water, and wipe away the first drop of blood, then test the 2nd drop. I can still get variations from one finger to the next though and have just put it down to a different blood/sugar concentration around my body.

  • This happened to me yesterday. I got a 171 after dinner which is WAY out of my normal range so I tested 3 more times (ouch) and got 95 - 94 - 94. I went to see my nutritionist today and she said I probably had something sugary on my hand and to use hand sanitizer or soap and water first. Scary read the first time...
