Baby Names

Unique, Classic, Trendy, or Odd?

Now that we know LO is a girl, we can focus in girl's names. Unfortunately out taste seems to be all over the board.

I've mentioned it before, but I'm a big fan of Bible, and of more unique, not YooNeek, names.

I recently came across Adah, which is a Biblical name meaning "ornament". Nothing too special about the name, not a good "character" name, but I kinda like it anyways.

What's this board's take on Adah?

It strikes me as kinda trendy, and might come across as "trying too hard". On the other hand, I think it's pretty, unique, and would age well. Or will at least age better than the YooNeek names that lots of people use these days.

It's not in our top 2 picks right now, but at least in my top 5, not sure how DH feels.

  • Is it pronounced Ay-duh?

That's what it sounds like in my mind. Not sure if the "official" pronunciation. ::mobile embarrassed smiley::

  • I like it! I've heard it add-ah and Ay-duh and i prefer Ay-duh. also agree with pp the original spelling of Ada is much better. im not a fan of unnecessary "h"s

I agree, I really like Ada (minus the h)

  • The funny thing is, I just looked both up on BTN, and Ada and Adah are not listed or connected as the same name. They're both there, but have different origins and meanings.

    ETA: same pronunciation however.
  • I really like Ada, spelled this way.  I do think people might think you said Ava though, just because Ava is so popular.

  • I've loved Ada since reading The Red Tent.
    It's a good name.

  • I'm gonna have to agree with everyone else here. I like Ada best.

  • It's my grandma's name! FWIW: in Russian, it's pronounced AH duh, as if you were saying ardor with a British accent :p

This. That 'h' is messing with how I pronounce it, and I want to say it "a-duh".

  • I think it's a nice name. It's on trend because Ava (and similar names, like Ida, Isla, etc. are in right now). You might get a few, "What, Ava?" but Adah is pretty easy to learn/say. And it's a lovely, simple name.

  • I think the Hebrew pronounciation would be uh-DAH.  But, I'm sure everyone would do AY-duh.

I remember seeing this in lists of Hebrew names when we were looking for a one for our son.

Agree. The "h" makes it weird, but it's cute without the "h"
