Postpartum Depression

Anxiety

I never had anxiety or suffered from depression before DD came along.  I was diagnosed when she was 5 months with PPA ( It's been awhile since I've posted on this board).  I have not been able to shake it and she is over 4 years old!  I stopped meds when she was 2 hoping I just needed to get my head clear and off meds.  Are there any other SAHM that have experienced this?  I mean I had normal anxiety but nothing like this.  I was in the Air Force for 4 years & after that worked in a high stress job.  I've moved several times in my life and have been able to adjust just fine but I just can't seem to get this anxiety to go away.  Anyone in the same boat or have words of wisdom?

Re: Anxiety

  • What is helping me is counseling.  Do you do that???  I've had anxiety for several years.  After this pregnancy, it has escalated.  My goal is drug free.  So I just started therapy.  I think it's key to find a good therapist.

  • I had severe GAD and panic disordered that was "triggered" when my daughter was born. My psych explained that some people are sort of vulnerable to mental health conditions. Often times it runs in families (my dad and grandfather both suffer from anxiety disorders and depression), and sometimes a big life change will trigger that condition or really bring it to the surface.

I've always been a bit of an anxious person, but when my daughter was born I suddenly found myself experiencing severe anxiety and constant panic attacks. I was diagnosed, put on medication, and have to come to terms with the fact that this is something I will probably deal with for the rest of my life. I initially thought it was just a postpartum thing, but I've been off the medication (and it's been almost 4 years) and I just cannot function without it.

Therapy and meds are the best way to deal with mental health issues. Get yourself a good team: a psychiatrist and a therapist or counselor. You can learn how to deal with anxiety! It's good to be drug free if you can, but for some people it's just not possible. Hang in there!

  • I would look into supplements that may help with anxiety. Magnesium, B Complex.

  • Supplements take a LOT of time to build up in your system and make a difference (years, sometimes). It's not going to help her right now.

  • This is going to sound a little goofy, but I had PPA as well (anxiety history prior to being pregnant), and discovered that it ebbed and flowed with my cycle.

I started on the mini pill to regulate my hormones a bit and have barely experienced any anxiety since.

    Just a random thought.  GL.
