My brother's name is Josiah... he isn't homeschooled, backwoods, hippie-ish, or odd in any way, so those associations don't make sense to me. :P He's always gone by Joe, I'd say it's about 50/50 on whether I'll say Joe or Josiah. His friends in high school did decide to call him "Jeb"/"Jebidiah" for awhile, which is much more backwoods to me. Blech. But teen boys will be teen boys, I guess?
I think it's a solid, classic, underused name and I like it a lot.
My cousin named her boy Josiah. My cousin lives in a major city and does not homeschool. It did take the family a while to get used to the name. My cousin's son is 5 now and we couldn't imagine him having any other name. We call him Jo a lot.
My girls have a five-year-old Josiah in their swim class. When first I heard his name, it struck me as a rare choice, but as with all kids and names, the more you get used to the child; the more accessible the name becomes, too.
My mom loves this name and keeps bringing it up. She is an elementary school teacher and there is a boy in the school named Josiah that used to be Amish, that's where she got it.

This kid may not have a lot of bowel, but he has plenty of guts! DS born at 34 weeks with (surprise!) gastroschisis turned short bowel syndrome. 131 days in the NICU, 7 trips to the OR, G-button, daily TPN....
We are impatiently awaiting the day we can say goodbye to his girlfriend Ivy for good.
Without any preconceptions, I think the name is fine. However, my dad's cousin named all of their kids very biblical names, including Josiah. They have 15 kids and live in a 3 bedroom house, they were homeschooled, didn't own a TV or radio, etc. So I can see where your H is coming from, but in the end, the name is what YOU make it to be.
Re: Josiah
This. What about Joseph or Joshua or Isaiah?
It's definitely one of those biblical names that doesn't get used in the mainstream, so I guess I see what your husband means by "home school" name.
It's a fine enough name. NMS, but by no means bad. Just a little backwoodsy for my taste.
It's on the top of my list!
I love it.
H says it's too girly sounding though.
