Mobile: GD lowering fasting numbers?
Hi ladies! I was recently diagnosed with GD, met with the dietitian Monday, went over the meal plan, etc. All my numbers have been great except my two fasting numbers have been high (91, 97) and I don't know how to get them lower!
I've made sure to not sleep too long, I tried to eat a low carb snack before bed, etc. I know numbers can spike at night, which is frustrating. The issue is my fasting and 1 hour numbers were the "good" ones during my 3 hour, so I was hoping those wouldn't be an problem now.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Re: GD lowering fasting numbers?
I agree, just try a different bedtime snack (as well as maybe toying with what you have for dinner) and make sure you're drinking plenty of water all day. The last two days I've had blueberries one night and a skinny cow fudge bar last night (again with the ice cream LOL) and both days my fasting numbers were awesome in the morning. Just experiment and see what works for you - if you're still having a tough time after a few days you can always call your nutritionist/Doc
I tried the ice cream (successfully) as well but after consulting with my doctor we agreed this is not what the body needs at this time. The last thing you want to do is pump your body full of sugar in order to just trick the system.
Honestly going on meds isnt that bad. I find it less painful and intrusive than the testing during the day. But that's just me.
I would try:
1. Drinking water throughout the night, though it will lead to more peeing it might help.
2. Pair a protein rich bedtime snack as close to your bedtime as possible (Plain Greek yogurt with chocolate (real cocoa) shavings)
3. Walk if you can right after dinner. Sometime the sustained activity level will help produce more insulin.
4. Drink water when you wake up, test 20 min. later.
A low carb snack may be your problem - your body will need the carbs overnight otherwise it'll release extra glucose which will give you higher numbers.
I was happy with a serving of ice cream + an extra protein and had great numbers to show for it. It wasn't the sugar and it's not "a trick" as the fat helps it break down differently, giving you better sustainment of your numbers for the long fasting stretch.

My fasting levels were the one number I could never get control of, no matter what I did. And my specialists opinion was that fasting numbers are almost impossible to control with diet so I ended up on insulin because they just kept rising.
At a PP said, insulin really isn't that bad and my experience is that it hurts less than the testing, and doing it once at night is much less intrusive as well.
