Potty question

Yet another potty question. My DD is capable of going on the potty but choses not to most of the time. Lately, she's been asking to go in the evening. The problem is she likes to stand to poop. I can't force her to stay on the potty long enough so we end up with poop on the floor sometimes or I put her back in a diaper and she poops in that.

What should I do? Keep letting her try? Put it off in hopes she's more ready? She knows poops belong in the potty, but she's still having a tough time. I usually pick up the poop with toilet paper and put it in the toilet and she flushes. Then we wash hands. I hope she doesn't think this is normal.

Re: Potty question

  • Physically pooping standing/squatting is easier and more comfortable and what she's been doing for 2 yrs.

Is she using a potty seat or the toilet?

if its the toilet try getting a stool so her legs are on more of a squatting position or a little potty which will do the same thing.

If its the little potty try encouraging her to sit longer by singing songs/reading books/or even breaking out the iPhone and letting her play if you have one if all else fails you can try putting it where she can watch a little but of a show just to help her sit long enough so she learns the new way of going poop.

Have you tried singing songs or letting her look at a book or anything like that to distract her long enough? If that isn't working, I'd let her just do it in the diaper. At least she's still telling you, and she's really very young, so NBD.

Yes, we have tried songs. She has potty books to read too. Maybe I should bring out a better selection. The songs have worked once, but you could tell she was scared and uncomfortable when she actually pooped.

She has both and sometimes asks to switch between them. We don't have a stool yet. I'll look into it.

I don't like her playing with my phone, but I have an ipad in a kid case, so maybe I'll bring it out just for potty time. Thanks!

  • Frankly, I am amazed that your barely two year old will even attempt to poop on the potty, so kudos to her. It takes time. A lot of children are hesitant (or for DD1, downright terrified) of pooping on the potty at first. Does she watch you poop? Take her with you and show her you don't poop on the floor, and just keep at it. She'll get it eventually.

Thanks! Around 18 months she was very interested so we bought a potty and she loved it. She'd go multiple times a day. I thought I had a baby genius. And then the novelty wore off and she lost all interest up until recently.

It has to be her idea or else she won't sit at all. I want to be supportive, but it's so fristrating sometimes, especially when she ends up going in her diaper anyhow after I spend time getting her out of footed pjs and then back in just to do it again. Lol

That happened with DD1. She was all into it, and then DD2 came along, and bam, no interest whatsoever. At 2yr 8 mo we tried it again, and she was fully PT'd in two weeks. Maybe 2 accidents since December. They say you can PT at 2 or let them PT themselves at 3. DD1 actually pees on the potty from time to time, but I don't think she is ready at 16 months, and it is just her wanting to be like her sister.

    GL! She'll get there.

  • I would get her a stool for the toilet and then teach her to squat over the toilet, supporting herself with her hands. That way she is sort of standing but at least it's over the toilet. Also throw some toilet paper on top of the toilet water so when she goes the plop doesn't cause a back-splash back up on her bottom.
