Multiples

Maybe Multiples?

I am 7 weeks and 1 day with my first pregnancy and my husband and I are having suspicions that I am having twins but would love to hear other perspectives since I'm new to this. My pregnancy has already been pretty eventful so please bear with me on this post! :

I thought I could be pregnant very early on, almost immediately following conception, since I began bloating and constipation and just felt weird preg wasn't planned. I took an early home preg test 4 days before my missed period and it came back positive with a faint cross line.

The next day which was about 12 dpo I woke up at 2:30am with the most painful cramping/contractions I've ever had. I felt like something was squeezing and ripping apart my organs in my lower abdoman and my RN mom who I happened to be visiting for the week insisted I go to the ER. They did a beta hcg and ultrasound when i told them about the home preg test and the doc said my hcg was very low in the 40s which indicated early pregnancy and they saw nothing on the US so he sent me home with no conclusion on the cramping other than "no blood is a good sign" and told me to come back in about 3 days.

I continued waking up with the cramping for the following 2 nights around the same times 2:30 3:00am, then had an episode during an afternoon nap on the 3rd day which was my first and only midday episode. I went back to the ER that night and saw an actual OB and after hearing my symptoms she concluded it could be gastrointestinal but I need to be followed closely by my doc once I returned home. She ran another beta hcg and good news was my levels had gone up and were mid400s which seem high for 15 dpo but she gave me the wide range for betas talk and sent me on my way with her blessing to start taking Colace and GasX before bed for the cramping.

I didn't think much of the betas at that point since I was more concerned about the awful cramping and bloating 2 pants sizes larger I was experiencing. The following week I returned home and saw an OB at 23 dpo. My beta that morning was 11,600 which was well above the normal scale for 5 weeks pregnant. I asked the OB if that was normal and he just beat around the bush and said it was too early to say and to come back when I return from my vacation I am on my flight home now. Since that visit I have been thinking twins and keep seeing little "signs" and having odd feelings it is twins. We are very anxious to find out! We will go in tomorrow but now that I have a chance to write this book since I have a 5 hour flight I thought I would check with all of you.

By the way, I think I've figured out the cramping and agree it is gastrointestinal so I'm eating differently and take a gas x before bed and I only have a couple episodes a week.

Other symptoms: I began feeling nausea right after arriving to our vacation destination around the 5 week 3 day mark and it's been pretty awful since then with sickness most if the day terrible nausea not vomitting though. I can't go anywhere in the car without the nausea. Still very bloated, still very gassy, constipation not so bad now, and always tired.

I would love to hear others input especially thoughts on multiples.

Thanks!

Also: I am 95 percent certain of my ovulation date considering my period regularity and the hcg progression I've calculated backwards. So I have pretty much ruled out the conceived earlier than I thought theory. I would have had to conceive on the last day of my period when I typically ovulate regularly around day 14.

Re: Maybe Multiples?

  • The only way to know is by ultrasound, and betas alone aren't necessarily an indicator of twins. Congratulations on your pregnancy and please let us know what you find out!!

  • I barely had any symptoms until about 8 weeks or so, besides exhaustion. We found out it was twins at the ultrasound at 6 wks or so. I never would have guessed. In fact the betas I had were fairly low and the doubling time was between 48 and 72 hours. So who knows? No one is going to be able to diagnose twins for you based on whats happened so far. Only and ultrasound will tell. Congrats on the pregnancy no matter how many!

  • First off, congrats! I had a positive test but since my normally regular cycles never came back after my first child, my OB had me come in for blood work too. My hcg levels were lower than expected so they ordered an u/s to get my EDD and that's when we found out we had twins and I was only 6wks along, not the 9wks we had thought. All my symptoms were the same as my 1st pregnancy, nothing indicated twins. When I questioned my OB about the hcg levels, she said that there's a huge range of normal levels and even then it isn't always an accurate indication of what is going on. Only way to tell is to have that u/s, which they may or may not do this early. They may make you wait till the standard 1st trimester screen unless they deem the other symptoms you have as potential complications. Either way, singleton or multiples, congrats and best wishes for a healthy pregnancy.

  • congrats, but you need an ultrasound to know. I have two healthy big boys still baking... I had lower betas, the pee test didn't register til after my missed period, I had NO symptoms until about 10 weeks (and then it was just fatigue) this puts me pretty much opposite of you...

GL and happy and healthy 9 months, I can't wait to hear after the ultrasound

  • You are pregnant and all those symptoms can be pregnancy related and not exclusive to multiples. Betas cannot indicate multiples either. All the women on here are pregnant with or have multiples so I'm not sure what response you are looking for. Only an u/s will tell you. Good luck!
  • Thank you for your replies! I guess I wasn't very clear in what I was asking so I apologize for that. Really I'm just curious to hear how my pregnancy experience so far may relate to yours since you are or have been pregnant with multiples and I have such a strong inclination that I am too. I don't expect a diagnosis, rather I'm just an anxious first time pregnant woman hoping there's someone out there who might share a similar experience to mine who can provide some reassurance. I assume that's the case for many/most on these forums.

I will post an update after my doc visit Thanks again for your responses!

  • You really just need to wait til an u/s...I had very little symptoms and my betas were not anything out of the ordinary. There was even one time they didn't rise that quickly. I hope you are having twins if that is what you want :) Congrats on your pregnancy!

  • The only way to tell is by ultrasound. I had virtually no symptoms (never did) and my betas were in the low, normal range. Strong symptoms mean nothing in terms of multiples (check out the 1st trimester board with all the posts about severe ms, bloating, etc., etc.) Very high betas might be an early sign, but yours don't sound all that high to me. Congrats on your pregnancy - just be excited about that for now!

  • I had a similar situation. When I tested at 10dpo my test line was very dark. I had one sided cramping at 15dpo, went to my dr's office and they did a scan, where they saw nothing at all, and blood work. At that time my hcg was 1,825. I know my dates for certain bc I was charting my temp and using OPKs. I had a hunch I was pregnant with twins and talked to my dr about it. I actually had a feeling during ovulation that we would conceive twins! haha! She sent me for another blood draw at 21 dpo and my hcg was 8,400. A week later, at 5 weeks 6 days, we had an ultrasound that confirmed it was twins. It was still a shock! I thought I was just getting worried and excited over nothing. Hope you have a happy, healthy pregnancy!

  • I don't have a clue what my betas are/have been but I do know cramping was a different symptom for me as compared to my first two pregnancies. The exhaustion is the only other thing that is amplified. I actually think that my morning sickness was worse with my second than with the twins. Congrats on your pregnancy.
  • I didn't have any cramping which I thought was very strange. This is my third pregnancy and I had significant cramping with my first two.

You'll get a mixed response given every pregnancy is so different. Multiples or not, you'll find lots of women who are experiencing part or all of what you're going through...especially since there's no difference in symptoms in a multiple pregnancy until 2nd or 3rd trimester, if at all. Reassurance wise, your symptoms sound like a perfectly normal early pregnancy.

Nothing is wrong with having strong inclinations. Its part of being a woman. I do hope, though, that you won't be disappointed if your instincts are wrong and you have a singleton. A lot of the PPs are trying to prepare you for that answer, especially since you don't have a prior pregnancy to compare this one with. When is your next OB appointment?

  • I was more exhausted at the beginning of this pregnancy, but I have a 4 year old, so that could have been the reason. Other than that, nothing was much different than my singleton pregnancy. My betas weren't even an indication. Good luck to you either way!!

Im almost 7 wks and am barely having symptoms. My beta was extremely high 18dpo 2,476...I knew I had twins from beta, but the u/s confirmed.
  • Every pregnancy really is different, but the one thing I'd learned from four pregnancies is that your mama intuition is still very strong. Who knows! Keep us updated!

First off all the "symptoms" you listed are not an indication of twins. For example I was way sicker with my singleton than I was with the twins, also nausea typically starts between 5-6 weeks for everyone. The actual beta number is not an idication of anything except that you are pregnant and the pregnancy is progressing.  Thinking that you may be pregnant right after conception is simply a suspicion because there arent really any symptoms of pregnancy until after implantation. Also having early symptoms is not a sign of twins..... ultrasounds are the only way to see if you are having twins.
