Subchorionic Hemorrhage?

This morning when I was at work, I stood up from my office chair and started gushing blood. Rushed to the OB and had an ultrasound where they found a 5cm SCH. I am a little over 13 weeks pregnant. The doctor was pretty laid back about it and just told me to take it easy and to come back in a week for a follow-up u/s. The baby looked great and was bouncing around with a good heart rate.  I had a small bleed with my first pregnancy around 6 weeks. That resolved itself and I delivered a healthy baby boy. I am having a hard time staying positive with this bleed. It is much bigger and the amount of blood I had with the first gush was terrifying. I thought my water broke there was so much. I am still bleeding heavily when I standup. Trying to rest and not do to much.

I could use some words of encouragement if anyone has a success story.

Re: Subchorionic Hemorrhage?

  • There are several women on this board who have an SCH, myself included. I'm currently on bed rest [because of my history with placental abruption and my high risk status before the SCH], and I've been keeping up my fluids and not doing any lifting since my first bleed was found at 6 weeks [I'm now 12 weeks]. My understanding is that a lot of these resolve on their own, and as long as the blood is brown or dark red [with no cramps], things should be OK. I've been bleeding on and off for three weeks, and my baby has looked great with all my ultrasounds.

Take it easy. Hoping that things turn out great for you and that this resolves itself quickly.

  • This is extremely scary and I am very sorry that you are dealing with it now. I have had two SCH with bleeding. Very scary but I am now 15 weeks and baby is great. I am on bed rest because of continued bleeding but baby is strong and wiggly. Just be sure to take the resting orders seriously and stay really hydrated. Sounds strange but it makes a huge difference.
  • Wow that must have been such a scare especially not knowing about the SCH prior to the bleeding. I have one and as PP said there are several of us here that do. Mine has been there since 7 weeks but I've only had one spell of bleeding from it. I'm sorry that you are still bleeding because I know it must be hard not to worry. I can say that my doctor only seems mildly concerned about mine now also. They are watching it, and I was on pelvic rest because of it, but now they took me off that and said to just take it easy.

While you are still spotting I would say keep your feet up, drink water if you can,  and I'd stay on pelvic rest (no sex) for a bit if I were you.  Hope the bleeding stops asap!

I have one too. I've been bleeding on and off for about a week. I'm also on Bed rest and a high risk too, (all before the SCH). I would say rest, take it easy and sleep.

  • Oh I totally feel your pain and stress. This happened at 8 weeks and it was the scariest thing that ever happened to me. I had planned a weekend with my girlfriends in Florida for months and it happened the night I got there. They had to call an ambulance because I was gushing ridiculous amount of blood. I was certain that I was losing my baby. I spend the night in the ER, went to the hotel to pick up my stuff and flew back home immediately.

Had 2 ultrasounds since then and baby is growing strong. I'm almost 13 weeks. Only now I'm starting to get excited about being a mom. I think I was just so terrified that I didn't want to get attached to the baby because I was certain I was going to miscarry at anytime.

Please know you are not alone and you can always PM me anytime with any questions. And know that the odds are in your favor. Hugs!!

  • I had an almost identical story with DD. Just into my second tri and bled a lot! Went to ER and had a SCH around that side. Had multiple follow up US and continued bleeding and spotting for up to 4 weeks. Pelvic rest and trying not to worry (which was near impossible) were what I did. DD was born beautiful and healthy at 38 weeks. Hang in there!!!!!
  • I also have one. This is my first week without spotting since 9 weeks. I also spotted at 7 weeks. The gushes were terrifying.

We should start an SCH check in.

  • Hey there, I am in the club too! Found out almost a month ago after heavy bleeding. They found the SCH and  said they almost all disappear on their own by 18-20 w eeks. I'm not allowed to exercise and I am on pelvic rest. I also have been told repeatedly to stay HYDRATED since dehydration can make your uterus contract. Hang in there, I guess this is more common than we think and soon it should be gone!

TTC since 01/13-Uterine Septum Surgery 12/12- During Surgery found Mod-Severe Endo which had left adhesions and attacked a tube. Very blessed to have found all this before TTC!

  • I had one a little over a month ago when I was 11 1/2 weeks & am still spotting brown today. As long as it is brown, my OB is not too concerned. I stood up from sitting down one Sat morning & I felt the gush. I was terrified to see so much there. Then as I was waiting for my OB's nurse line to call me back, & I had another gush. I had never even heard of SCH before that.

Nurse advised us to go to ER, where we had an u/s. They found a large 9.3 cm SCH.  Luckily is was located on the opposite side from where the placenta was located. LO was still kicking around just fine.

It stopped bleeding within about a week, but that lasted about 4-5 days before it started up again, but only brown. I've been continuing to spot ever since. Just when I think it is about to stop, it picks up a little bit again.

I was advised to take it easy, watch heavy lifting in particular, and pelvic rest.  Pelvic rest should continue til I've had about 2 weeks with no spotting.

I'm hoping it ends soon, but am thinking it must be the size that is causing it to take so long to stop. My OB said it rarely lasts past 18 weeks, so I'm hoping since I'm 16 w now!

  • Another one here in the club, complete with ER visit and everything.

Also told pelvic rest, no heavy lifting, hydrate, and general rest until bleeding stops (not exercise, no vacuuming, etc).  Baby appeared completely healthy and everything.

You are definitely not alone!  I had several that bled like you experienced multiple times with large clots, and then led to continuous spotting until the next bleed.  This occurred for me from weeks 5-13 consistently.  I am now 15 weeks and have been bleed and spotting free for 2 weeks, and the baby is showing as happy and healthy as can be!  Just rest, drink LOTS of fluids and make sure you are eating enough.  My bosses were kind enough to bend our telework rules to allow me to telework completely until I got an all clear from my doc, maybe that's an option fo you?
  • Thanks everyone for sharing your stories and encouragement! Today, I am not feeling as drained and the bleeding how slowed down substantially and I have not had any cramping. I have a very busy 3 year old son, so the hardest part has been trying to keep quiet. My husband and in-laws have been helping keep the little guy busy. I am hoping my u/s next week will reveal a smaller clot and I can start to enjoy my pregnancy again.

I hope everyone else is doing well with their SCH's!
