Probably, I know Andrews, Alexanders, and Sebastians who don't go by NNs.
My Theodore goes by Theo 90% of the time, but that's because of DH and me using it.
ETA: I always introduce him as Theodore. But when he starts a new class, the teacher asks if he goes by a NN and when I say Theo, that tends to be what the teacher calls him exclusively. I'm sure if I said 'no NN' they would follow that lead. ie, his bff at pre-k goes by Alexander, not Alex or Xander.
Well, any name can theoretically stand on its own if the parents use the full name - people will begin to associate the child with the full name only. But... the big caveat... the child may eventually decide he prefers a nickname, and at that point, there is nothing you can do. I wouldn't be surprised if a school-aged boy decided he liked Theo or Ted better (easy to spell, etc) and that's what he'll end up going by if that's what he likes. My son's name is Nathaniel, so we are in a similar situation. I wouldn't be surprised if one day he decided he wanted everyone to call him something like "Nate", and at that point, I'll just have to accept his preference.
I know one, he goes by theo. and I agree, love the name but dislike the nn associated with it. I'm in Australia and here, we shorten every name so Theodore would definitely be shortened and it just wouldn't be an option to have everyone say the full name. We are Kiara and Stacey and every where we go, ppl call my partner Stace which she hates and I get K. Lol Aussies... We are a lazy bunch when it comes to names!
Both my sons go by their full name only. I simply introduce them as such and they are called that. If people ask about a nn (generally for DS1, but sometimes DS2) I say, "we will call him (name) until he tells us otherwise". Nobody's disrespected that yet. Simple!
